This is a thing i've thought for a long time about this individual. He seems to have this macho man thing about himself and the beard and everything is all a part of that. All in all it's rather tragic. To even mention his name in the same breath as Randy Rhoads is sacrilege.

I was never impressed by Zakk Wylde's playing or "music".One day last summer I was sitting in my car having a coffee in a parking lot while waiting for an appointment when this guy about 25 years old traipsed across the parking lot with a Black Label Society jacket,T-shirt and all the associated parafernalia, hair and beard that you'd see Zakk Wylde wear.I almost spit my coffee across the windshield to see such a doufus who was strutting around like he was a rock star.Truth be known he probably couldn't play a note but he was still entertaining to watch even if he couldn't play a note.

I saw Zakk perform at the Dallas Guitar Show in the early 1990's (I think it was 1993, when it was still held at the Dallas Convention Center).

At the time, was still playing the Southern Rock/Metal stuff that dominated his band "Pride & Glory", but he had a "pickup" band of an unknown (and very square-looking) bassist and a freaky looking drummer (I don't know who he was but I saw him play around D/FW several times)...

I was impressed by his performance, which included a couple of songs I later heard on Pride & Glory (the album) and how he "owned" a cover of "Mississippi Queen"...the band had obviously not rehearsed much (if any), and they still rocked pretty well...

I'm not a big fan (neither am I a detractor) of Ozzy, but the early stuff with Zakk in the group was ok.

However, the last few recordings I have listened to (BLS and latter-day Ozzy) just seemed to be a series of pinch harmonics. I don't know if he's hit a plateau in his playing, or if he is really wanting to sound like that, but I know from what I saw 19 years ago, he can do more than that.

Thanks Danny. I agree.

No worries, mate.
I've caught myself getting caught up in the artist bashing band wagon before too. I don't know why we musos are sometimes susceptable to it but we get like chickens in a pen, don't we? When one chicken gets a tiny little spec of blood on it the others peck away at it until they kill it. The truth is if most of our members had even half of Zakk's talent they'd still be improving themselves by a factor of about 200 from where they are now. The day one of our members is ever chosen by Ozzy Osborne to be his next guitarist that's when I'll suffer that one guy to bash Zakk.

i enjoy zakk's playing. alot. hell, i like the BLS stuff and pride n glory stuff. dude has got some chops. as far as the image, i think he is just being himself.
i guess maybe he should shave and quit lifting weights and drop the pinch harmonics. change his name to zakk mylde. i'd give my left testicle to play half as good as zakk. and you mr. euphoria.

warren haynes is my current favorite these days. hardly ever hear anyone talking about him. i understand your frustration. he's not nearly as flashy or technical but man, he sure can find the sweet spot.
love that guy.

+1 Warren is my new number one for about a year or so now.

His cover of Voodoo Child with Slash was supreme. Other than that, no thanks. Same goes for Slash (unless it's early GnR AFD, UYI (1 and 2) )

Quick little story..

I was given tickets for a VIP section for Slipknot in Vegas. ZW was in our section. He stood at the back of the seating just glued to his phone (texting or internet) for about 2-hrs by himself. Nobody bothered him. I told my friend, "I gotta shake his hand. He's freaking Zakk. I can't walk outta here without meeting him."

I walked up to him, told him I was a huge fan, asked if I could shake his hand. He looked me right in the eyes and flipped me off 2" from my face. Not one word.

I imagine becoming a celebrity changes a person.

I imagine that change would be for the worse.

I'm sure he's not the first to dissappoint a fan and likely won't be the last.
