I can't say that I have ever noticed a difference if I tie my strings or not when I restring, but I usually do. Does it make any difference to you, and what kind of a player are you? Your restring job looks cleaner if you don't tie IMHO.

in my experience tied strings on a steel string guitar are more prone to breakage at the tuning head. although many people have different ways of doing this, its really not necessary in my opinion. the more places you bend the string the more weakened spots you create that could possibly snap.

There's no reason to tie them if they are wrapped around the tuner pegs properly. :?

+1 on everything that's been said so far.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I don't tie...and never had problems. Its wrapped around a post multiple times.I do however pull the string back on a 90 degree angle opposite of which way the wrap goes.

Please do not tie your strings unless it is at the bridge of a classical nylon string guitar. Tying steel strings just makes restringing the guitar that much more of a pain in the butt. I work at a guitar store where restringing guitars is something I do all the time. We never tie steel strings, and they're always more aggravating to take off. So please, have mercy on the people who may end up restringing or setting up your guitar in the future and just wrap them around the post like normal. It really makes no difference for tuning stability or anything.

I don't tie my strings on the peg. Never have...

But I do wind with one wrap on top of the string in the hole, and the rest wrapping below down the peg. It works great and makes sort of a pinch effect on the string wrap and stays in tune, no matter what I do to my strat!

I have NEVER tied my strings. If they are wound around the tuners properly, there's absolutely NO need to.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

A properly wound string doesn't need to be tied.

OK guys, I'll bite. So what is the best way to restring a guitar. Any video, youtube, hints. Here's what I found some time ago, and that is how I restring my guitar .

http://www.gretschguitars.com/en-CA/videos

Clic on the "tech tip videos" and then "restringing a bigsby".

The Acoustic Guitar String w/ Steve Brand is the technique I use on all guitars! The absolute best way to string a guitar!

Can't say I ever have. I was taught to bend it at a sharp angle and wrap half way around the peg. It helps prevent the string from slipping out. I've also noticed it helps me with tuning stability.
