so i'm considering getting one, to get my solo band going somewhere.
i just need to know, do they plug into your amp, or do you need a PA system or what?

They run through your amp:

Guitar -> Effects -> Amp input

That's if you're running everything straight into the amp. If your amp has an effects loop you could also run certain effects through that such as eq, modulation, etc. These effects bypass the preamp.

You could get really deep in to how to order effects and where to run them. It all depends on what gear you have and what sounds best to you. If it's an overdrive box you're looking for, I would avoid running that through the effects loop.

My cousin, Lincoln Durham, uses the Backporch Bass stomp box when playing live, to great effect. It adds an interesting element to his shows, as well as a lot of depth to the sound.

It took him some time to get the timing just right, but when he did, boy howdy!

Be like 'Hook' (John Lee Hooker) and just stomp on a wooden pallet.

More seriously though, check this out :

You could just buy a cheap kick drum and put it beside your pedal board, some stomp boxes can be a bit on the expensive side.
