Looks pretty cool, I especially like how they didn't relic it like they did the jaguar.

And a different bridge and finishes, and a left hand option.
Somebody's bound to buy them.

I must agree. But KC was a great player too, and the leader of a generation.

Cobain is internationally known on the microphone. I've never heard of Mick Mars. I might be ignorant, but I'm not the only one. Cobain is historically important. Extremely so. My ignorance is not atypical; this illustrates the answer to your question.

Opinions about their respective artistic merits aside...

Cobain might have more individual name recognition, but I would venture a guess that Motley Crüe has nearly equal name recognition as a band.

Both Cobain and Mars probably deserve their own models.

But as for me, I'm still waiting for a Tab Benoit Telecaster.

I googled Mick Mars and, of course, found out he's the Motley Crue guitarist in 0.07 seconds. And of course I've heard of Motley Crue. But I think my point about fame remains valid, not that fame needs to be the criteria for when one gets a signature guitar. A casual listener of a band like Motley Crue, like me, never bothered to learn the guitarist's name (until I became interested in being a guitar player myself). Whereas everybody, musican or not, knows Kurt Cobain. Just sayin....

If name recognition were the criteria, Jim Root (the jackwagon from Slipknot) wouldn't have TWO signature models. Nor would Eric Johnson, Dave Murray, Yngwie Malmsteen, Marcus Miller, GE Smith, Lee Ranaldo, J.'Mascis, Thurston Moore, Jim Adkins, Robert Cray or Mark Knopler...all of those guys are not well known outside of guitar player circles.

I'm not saying Mick Mars deserves a signature model or not (I'm not a fan or detractor), bit I think it's just odd that a guy like Cobain has been granted three signature models (Jag-Stang, Jaguar and Mustang) while many other deserving (from an artistic/musical ability standpoint) artists have none...

...as I said, where's a Tab Benoit Tele? Or a Charlie Sexton Stratocaster? Or a Doyle Bramhall II Strat? Or a Andy Fairweather-Low Strat?

When I reflect further, the two things Kurt Cobain had going for him:

(1) The label of "voice of Generation X" (a label he hated that was bestowed upon him by the media, and it was highly inaccurate, because I'm of Gen X and he is not my voice, then or now). Again, that lends itself to your name recognition argument.

(2) the fact that he played unique instruments that were modified in interesting or popular ways.
