Happy Birthday MLK!

I live in Atlanta and had the opportunity to attend a service at Ebenezer Babtist Church(where he sermoned) two years ago on his Birthday. I am not religious, but that was a wonderful experience. Also, I did a tour of the home he grew up in. He was a bright induvidual. Can you believe he graduated college at the age of 16? He was a human sponge when it came to absorbing knowledge.

Considering this is a music forum, African Americans have made great contributions to blues and jazz despite the hurdles they had to face living in a difficult time in this country.

Here is a link a friend sent me. Very uplifting!

The Rev. Dr. King had a message for mankind that transcended race, creed or religion, his message was so simple that it was brilliant that is basically that we are all God's children and in being so are all brothers and sisters and we should treat each other as such.

On a side note, the night Dr King died, Hendrix was playing in Virginia Beach and he apparently busted out one of the best impromptu on his career, sadly I've never found any recording. Has anyone heard of it?

I marched yesterday in the annual MLK Day March here in Dayton, it was very uplifting. We also attended the MLK Day dinner last night, it also was uplifting.

I saw & heard Dr King speak twice in the '60s here in Dayton. At that time Dayton OH was one of the most segregated cities in the 'North' and conditions for blacks working in retail stores was terrible.

My grandmother was in the NAACP and got tickets to hear Dr King at the University of Dayton http://www.jumpbackhoney.com/?page_id=238, there had been a snow storm, but we there was a church bus that brought people to the UD campus.

Dr King was late because of the snow storm I remember but was still very well received by the people waiting to hear speak. Honestly, at the age of 14yrs I didn't quite understand, or remember a lot of what he talked about, but I do remember feeling his charisma and feeling his passion for all people.
