My dream in life is to graduate from the United States Air Force Academy with a degree in mechanical engineering. I want to help design fighter and stealth jets.
I want to keep my guitars and music though. I was doing some research on who to contact to show that I'm interested in getting into the Academy, when I ran across something. I can't take my guitars with me to the Academy! No personal items are aloud.
I was thinking about renting a storage garage thing, and keeping them in there for when I can go to town on the weekends.
Anywho, what's your experience with guitars and the military?

Wonderful idea Tessa. I was in the USAF for 8 years and we weren't allowed to bring anything to training. Once assigned to a base was a different story. I was in a trio in North Carolina and a quintet with singers in the UK. This advice from T2 "I retired from the AF after 28 years (Just Last Year) at the rank of SMSgt and CRGM is correct. As a cadet you won't have time for such things. Getting into the AF Academy is not like applying for college, you will need at a minimum a graduate of the Academy to give you a recomendation, in writing, for a start. Your congressman, might also be of assistance." Sounds very good as what you'll be studying and then doing is quite different then what I was. I was only a grunt on the flightline but as some others have said "I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything". CRGM is also looking out for you by giving you serious information about a seriously hard curriculum. But he, as do all of us, have confidence in you and want you to succeed in what ever you do.

I know the academy isn't going to be easy, I know it's going to be extreamly hard. but it's what I want to do.
I do have a back up plan, or more like 2, if I don't make it, I'll either enlist immediately, or will apply to another college and go for mechanical engineering.
next year I will be starting high school, and sadly, my school doesn't offer many higher math or sciences, but I'm going to try to see if I can take some online courses to help me out. both math and science are my favorite subjects, so it's awesome that I have to take alot of them. I would regardless.
I know I'll probobly have to leave my music at home, unless I can figure out the storage building thing, but that still may not be aloud.
I know the path ahead of me isn't going to be easy, but look at the past behind me, it dang sure ain't been easy. I've started now. I'm in the process of writing to Congressmen and Senators, and even to Academy to let them know I'm interested, we took a mock SAT test before Christmas, when we get our results back, I'll send that as well as a current report of my grades,
I understand the possibility of not making it. But can't isn't in my vocabulary:
"I Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Me"
Phillipians 4:13
I live by that verse. if it's His will, I'll make it. I will do everything I possibly can to make it.
I will be in the Air Force either way.

I'm a United States Navy Special Warfare Boat Operator Second Class, SB2(SWCC/SW), and in my experience once I finished special warfare core and basic crewman I've pretty much kept some gear on me at all times when I wasn't in some kind of interesting situation. Just last year I did a year in Iraq and had a couple of guitars and a baby amp there with me.

What it will depend on is the type of housing you get, if it's open bay barracks or something of the like, then forget it.
