So, I'm in the market for a new performance mic. I have been using a Shure Sm58, but I'm looking for something new, with something that fits my personal taste and style a little bit more. I've always loved the look of retro microphones, but I can't find anywhere to test them, and reviews I read are things that scare me...I was looking at a Nady Torpedo, but I've read that since they are meant to be used by harpists, they have a rather tinny sound to them...but I figure that could be fixed by a proper setting on a PA system?

I'm looking for people who've had a little experience with them. I want something that looks similar to the links below, preferably for 100 bucks or less. Any suggestions?

Hiya, TET!

Unfortunately, as with any microphone type, to expect great quality for under 100 $ is near impossible, unless you go for a used item (not recommended for microphones which are in constant contact with face/lips). So getting a product from Shure is probably the best way to go.

Slightly narrower pattern and more pricey:

A great alternative with sturdy insides and outsides for a great price:

Never tried - looks cheap:

Tried some of their products, they do great stuff for little money. Never tried this one though:

Or a ribbon mic for that '20s look (be careful with too high sound pressure and/or wind - not built for rocking stage performances!):

There's not many "retro" looking mics out there. I would go for the shure 55sh. No-one ever really went wrong with a Shure ("built like a tank" etc.). Let us know how you get on!

Cheers

Nutter
