I have been looking for a quality guitar cable but don't want to break the bank. I saw that Fender has a 18.5 footer for around 40 bucks. I also have a MIM Strat and a BJr amp. Any suggestions and opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

if you are into coil cables, check out the vox. heavy duty-no noise, and you can get them for 35 bucks.

Monster are great. Both have lifetime warranties and they work, they replaced one of mine. And I think CAFeathers had a Planet Waves Cable and they replaced his too. Might do a search for that thread, it covers most of what you are looking for.

Don't skimp on chords. Cheap chords are susceptible to noise, color the sound (coil cables color the sound), and the quality of the sound is poor. I've done side by side tests. Most cables, the expensive and the cheap, boost the bass (boomy), sucks some mids out boosts other mids resulting in a limited mid-range, and there are minimal highs (very weak highs). One cable stands out from the rest. George Lynch cables.

There's a 10 footer for 30 and a 20 footer for 50. They have a patch cable kit for 80, you can make 5 custom patch chords with ten feet of chord, usually with 4 or 5 feet to spare, then you can get another jack pack for 25 and make 5 more! They have bulk kits, which end up being inexpensive compared to other chords.

On a spectrum analyzer, the GL cables are the clear winner. If you aren't happy with a GL chord, something's lacking in your rig!

Yes, I use the Planet Waves cables with the circuit breaker in them. One went bad and was replaced free of charge!!

I guess it depends on what you mean by breaking the bank. I've seen instrument cables for as little as $15 and as much a $1,600 for a typical 15 footer. The ones that are about $1 per foot are usually crapola and should be avoided at all times. IMO if that's all a person can afford for a cable then they should forget playing guitar as it is an unnecessary luxury. People staying at a hotel will spend more than that on breakfast.

Most average quality cables are priced somewhere between $2 and $3 per foot. In the average range RODAM makes a good one. It's got a lifetime guarantee as long as you keep the sales slip. They don't even care if you stomp on it with the heel of your cowboy boots and break it internally. You're covered. I haven't seen them in my area lately but I'm pretty sure they're still available.

Good quality cables will run you anywhere from $6 to $10 per foot. That's about where reason and common sense ends though because to get a better cable than that you usually have to spend $25 to $75 per foot and the difference just isn't that noticeable. I've been using Evidence Audio cables for a while now. They're about $7 to $8 per foot. Some people like the Forte model but I like the Lyric HG. The Forte uses a cotton sheath that gets dirty on the floor. The Lyric HG is very durable, extremely well shielded, excellent quality plugs and it uses wire that is both heavier and better quality than most cables. Higher than normal copper content in the wire and significantly heavier guage means almost no voltage drop (signal loss). Lower and midrange fundamentals won't get lost at all in lesser cables but highs and harmonics can easily be reduced far more than a person might think.

For most people a $40 cable will suffice. I'd recommend RODAM. If you are something of a tone snob you might want to look into Evidence Audio. If you have more money than Donald Trump you can get a lovely $2,000 guitar cable from Allesandro. Click the link and go to the last cable at the bottom of the page. Now that's what I call breaking the bank.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

"These cables use Teflon insulation over a solid silver core."

...better bring a security detail too, or it, they will go bye-bye! :(

...honey, order me two of those, one 20', one 10', and 10' more for patch cables and 22 connectors!

...I had no idea silver is the way to go. ...hmmmm, I wonder how much it will cost to roll my own??? ...how many ounces of silver does it take to roll out one foot o' chord???

And, how much of a difference will it make between it and a George Lynch cord, 3 bucks a foot!?

Dunno if they're still available but I've got a couple of 20 year old Belden cables which I've had NO issues with. Didn't cost a lot either.

I`ve been using the same Road Hog cables for about 20 years for my instruments and for the speaker cabinets, they only cost about $25 for a 15 ft. cable and $15 for a 6 ft. speaker cable. These cables are very quiet, kinkproof and very sturdy.

I like the Planet Waves cables and use both the circuit breaker and non circuit breaker cables. I've had good luck with both kinds.

I use the planet waves ones with circuit breakers as well have had one or two replaced with no hassle. They sound great and I like having the circuit breaker, but one thing I will say is that they aren't as flexible as they could be, which is a problem for me because I do quite a lot of walking around when I play.

Out of curiosity, I compared the patch cables that came with the Mustang V head (the black cables with the red cover on the jacks) with the George Lynch patch cables. ...the Fender cables acted like antennas and picked up tons of noise and sounded weak, the GL's were quiet, clear, and strong.
