Hi!

This is nothing to do with guitars but I am planning yet another trip to my favourite holiday destination - the U.S. of A. - this summer with my wife and two children. This time, the trip will coincide with our 20th wedding anniversary and I was wondering whether anybody on this forum knew of a good but reasonably priced, child-friendly restaurant in or near Flagstaff where we could celebrate our anniversary. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Gilles

You're right, there are three!!
Whereabouts in Herts are you, incidentally, beat_poet? I work in Hemel-Hempstead!

Gilles...We have a restauranteur who is a Forum member, and one other who is in a particularly good position to advise you. Without saying more, I've put the question to one of them offline. Let's see what we come up with.

Doc

Thus far, one source regrets that they are not familiar with that town well enough to offer any suggestions. I've emailed the other who is in the business. Perhaps there's something in his grapevine he can offer. Either way, look to your private messaging for a reply from me.

Doc.

Hi Gilles: back in the day you used to be able to take a light aircraft very affordably from Flagstaff up to the Grand Canyon, and I'm sure you still can. A quick turn above the Canyon then come in to land at a little airstrip they have there. From there a shuttle bus takes you in a few minutes over to the rim, where you will find a child friendly restaurant and some rather fine views at Bright Angel Lodge.

Sunset over the landscape and fly back to Flagstaff. A memorable anniversary well and truly accomplished. Howzat?

In the early '90s I once spent three months staying at Bright Angel Lodge (work related). Which frankly was about two months and 28 days more than anyone would want - but as a location for a special event: not bad.

Cheers - C

EDIT: dyslexic typo

I've been to that location as well. The drive-in from Flagstaff is a no-brainer and likely less risky, IMHO.

Probably - does the drive take long?

Mind you, seeing the Canyon appear all along the horizon as you fly towards it and then that moment when the plane shoots out over the chasm before banking to come in to the strip - that's one of the better aviation experiences in the world, in my experience! :D (I can suggest a few others...)

Can't remember the name of the little airline company they had there in Flagstaff, but I expect it's fairly obvious when you arrive. I also used them to fly up from Phoenix and that was quite fun too. A tiny four seater aircraft, and because I was the only passanger the pilot let me sit in the front with him. Quite cool taxiing along at Phoenix between Airbuses and Boeings with wheels bigger than our whole plane. And then on the flight up to Flagstaff the pilot let me take the controls, which was kinda nice of him.

Anyhow. It wasn't pricey: at least worth looking into, I'd suggest. It's a 20th anniversary, after all.

Cheers - C

Thanks. The Grand Canyon (South and West) is on our agenda too, as are Monument Valley in Utah and Mesa Verde NP in Colorado but I'm not mad about flying. I can just about put up with the transatlantic flights but ever since my best friend's Dad was killed in a major air disaster, I have been a little nervous.
We will definitely check out Bright Angel Lodge; I guess it's on the South Rim at or near Canyon Village?

South Rim, yep.

And to be sure, for that Canyon-from-the-air experience you most definitely need a good head for heights and strong trust in your pilot... :D

BTW: if you're touring Arizona be sure to check out Forum user Gratz's restaurant, Cafe Tremolo in Tuscon. Very nice guy, and by all reports an excellent place to eat and drink:

Have fun - C

It's he I contacted for Gilles. If Gilles will be in the vicinity of Tucson, he should let us know. Remember, Gratz also operates a tea house in that town.

Unfortunately, we'll be coming from L.A. via Blythe CA, through Phoenix for lunch and straight up to Flagstaff. Tucson is regrettably too far south.

Our itinerary is: Las Vegas NV --> Bishop CA via Death Valley NP --> Yosemite NP --> San Francisco --> Los Angeles via Sequoia NP --> Blythe CA --> Flagstaff AZ via Phoenix --> Grand Canyon South Rim --> Tuba City AZ --> Monument Valley UT & Mesa Verde CO --> Tuba City AZ --> Old Route 66 via Seligman AZ to Kingman --> Grand Canyon West & Skywalk --> Hoover Dam then back to Las Vegas.

All of this in exactly two weeks so needless to say, we won't be staying anywhere long!!!

Hi gillies, I live in Tucson but make it up north as much as I can. Beaver creek brewery is one of my favs ,crystal creek sandwich shop is another but not sure it is still open. If you have an opportunity head down to Sedona lots of good resturants there in all price ranges, if you are heading to the canyon area the El Tovar at the south rim is very nice and if you head over near Page stop at Cammeron and get a Navajo taco.
Also in Sedona is a great natural food store called frontier market it sells lots of prepared food and is great for a picnic in the redrocks. there are alot of chain eaterys out there and most are over priced and not very good. so keep an eye out for local owned places and most of all enjoy the beauty of the area and congratz on your aniversary .
Doc thanks for the heads up hope this helps.
