If the music is there, there is no need for the theatrics of smashing a guitar..IMO.

That is also true but it is kind of like star power on Guitar Hero (puke) it compliments the music, especially if it is like a very punk/question authority song kind of like Killing In The Name by Rage Against The Machine a guitar smash at the end of that would be EPIC

In the Guitar Hero segment of the TV series The History of Rock and Roll, Pete Townsend very graphically expresses his opinion about people who feel that way.....

The worst serial abuser of guitars, in my opinion, is Yngwie. Google the video of him carelessly stacking vintage instruments in a slipshod manner...of course, even if he didn't do that, I consider his (*ahem*) performances to be abuse of both the instrument and the listener.

Way to go... And I thought I must have been the only one to think he just made a tortured cat sound. I was beginning to think I didn't really know music. Thank you man...
yep, I know my opinion but I am not alone. :)

Haha! Yeah, well...

As a lifelong Who fan I always had deeply conflicted feelings about the gear smashing thing. With most of my head I found it a silly distraction and quite dismaying. But very secretly I have to admit there's a dark under belly to my soul that also found it exciting - not that I'd ever say that out loud.

Kinda like the mixed sensations we have watching a fight in a bar.

At any rate, for better or worse when The Who did it it was for real, they weren't faking. Unlike some others I can think of.

Cheers - C

and PT's view of it was, freely translated....."It's my 'frakking' guitar, anyway." "Who's to tell me what I can or can't do with my 'frakking' guitar!"

The Who was pure raw energy and with all that energy things got to blow up sooner or later. That part of Rock and Roll. You can always tell when its real. Richie Blackmore torchered a few strats also.

Keeping in mind that these guitars which are sent to their doom are mere tools of the trade, purchased and written off as such, it can be said that for those of us for whom the price of a good guitar is hard won, it is quite painful to watch the willful destruction of same as part of performance art. :( That, for me, has always been at the crux of this entire matter. Then, adding insult to injury, the detritus of same become collectibles, bringing outrageous prices at auctions. The human condition never ceases to amaze me. :?

If you are a proffesional musician can you write instruments off as a business expense?

Amortization of costs over its useful life, other things like using part of your home as a recording studio, your car as transportation, and on, and on, and on.....

When rock stars have that much money, I suppose it's no different to a handyman breaking a drill bit.

True, however the Handyman won't break the bit on purpose just to show he can and because it is his...he is wiser than that and respects his tools :!: :!: :!:

My brother-in-law works on construction sites and he destroys tools so fast it would make your eyes water. If Pete Townshend hadn't made it as a rock star and had become a builder instead - that's my brother-in-law. :|

Jerry Lee Lewis aka "The Killer" invented rock and roll mayhem/pyrotechnics. Although never captured on film, rumor has it, The Killer did this to a few piano's over the years
Great balls of fire! Jerry Lee Lewis

Yep....and it took every ounce of reserve to avoid destroying my piano bench when I was 15 years old, and playing his stuff. By the way, are you aware that he and Berry duked it out once over the question of who was the king of rock and roll?
