I've said on this forum before that I like to use nail polish. A couple of coats of clear very carefully applied (fill in just the chip) and then polished out with a quality auto polish and it will hardly be noticeable. It's a durable fix but can always be easily removed if you screw it up.

This will work if the '57RI in question is an American model finished in nitro. Otherwise, it won't help. Also, you need to be very careful not to disturb the color coat beneath the clear or things can get very messy indeed. Go lightly (as tvr1979 indicated).

A more luthier-type approach would be to use some real nitrocellulose lacquer, either in a can or an aerosol. It takes a certain amount of skill not to make a horrible mess, though.

If it's a polyester finish on a MIM Classic '50s then things are more tricky. A repair is possible but probably it won't be an invisible mend.
