Hey guys & girls,

Funk is Alive and Well... every Monday Night at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans !!

Papa Grows Funk is a 'House Band' that features some very talented players:

John 'Papa' Gros on the B3, June Yamaguchi on Guitar (amazing guitarist and featured on the HBO Show - Treme´ ) - http://www.papagrowsfunk.com/ .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9anTPS_nPBw

June is an amazing player that works his axe like a Mo' Fo' ! Though he still needs to learn what it's like to pound a Fender !

I especially recommend their CD: ' Live at the Leaf ' !!

The Maple Leaf is 1 block from the Ohio St. stop of the St. Charles Streetcar (Carrollton Turn), and right next door to one of NOLA's hottest food places - Jacques Imo's.

My wife and I visit NOLA every year for JazzFest and the trip is not complete without a stop at the Maple Leaf to see Papa Grows Funk !!

Be sure to check out their tunes showcased in the Media Player on their site !

cheers!

Johnny Otis the late great blues singer, music artist and music impresario, son Shuggie wrote and recorded this song in 1971 and the Brothers Johnson covered it in 1977:

I love funk and soul music, stars from the 60s like James Brown,Joe Tex,The Isley Bros. etc. paved the way for acts such as Bootsy Collins,Parliment,The Funkadelics,Sly and The Family Stone etc.Back in the 70s and early 80s we used to get some great funk acts coming through here even though at the time the population here was 99.99 percent Caucasian.Funk music was really big here among the younger adult population and we'd get such great funk groups as The Crack Of Dawn, Tower of Power, James Knight and The Fabulous Butlers,The Glen Ricketts Show ( who I spent a whole Saturday afternoon jamming Hendrix with at the usual Saturday jam that the club put off). There were many other funk acts that I can't quite remember the names of but every funk act that came here was top notch talent and always drew a full house. There is something about funk that just really connects with me and gets into my system,it really gets my blood pumping and feet tapping.

I listen to funk bass day and night. After all that..I say Flea is the best of the bunch. There's a good reason why he's rich and on a major label. He even looks funky...
