Stanley was great. He played most of the show on upright. For me it quickly went from transcendental to existential. Watching great musicians who genuinely respect each other from the second row was transcendental. The woman next to me started crying at one point. Walking out and flashing back on all of the emotional degradation I've been through playing in bands kinda sent me into an existential funk.

It's funny I grew up listening to John Prine's version of "Sam Stone" and one morning I was walking home from working an overnight and heard the Swamp Dogg version blasting from a car and had to look it up.

Here's a Canadian obscurity. The song has been covered by Diana Ross and the Supremes. But was written by Canadian Actor, Comedian, Dancing With The Stars contestant, and former prisoner of the US War on Drugs, Tommy Chong:

Chong wrote it about dating white girls who would tell their parents that he was Italian instead of half Chinese.

I've got this going in the background at work right now. Parts of this almost remind me of Prince:

I’m familiar with Bobby Taylor and the song, Rev’. The band was well established when I was in Vancouver in the 60s. I also met Tommy, and knew of his association; but, thanks to you I now know the background to the song. I never heard that story. Pretty funny.
Q-Tip. I can hear what you mean about Prince. Something about the cadence, perhaps? There’s no surprise rap and hip-hop is not my fave; although, it is always good to listen outside the box lest one misses out; but, I’ve often pointed to Mrs. FSB what I consider plausible rap (raw or otherwise) to my taste YMMV as opposed to that which seems disingenuous, over produced, under whelming or forced, and removed from good music overall. I prefer the rapper not to sound like other rappers, singing is helpful, or to at least make it their own. Copy cats are so karaoke and plentiful. Boring.

There are Elvis impersonators and then there is Elvis. Jay-Z and Beiber and wannabes. Some better, perhaps, but after the original, time to move on unless you like the Mouseketeer label. There is only one Madonna, one Michael Jackson, one Geddy Lee, and so on. We only need one Lauryn Hill, Eminem, Nas, Dr.Dre, MG Doom, Queen Latifah, Nicki Minaj, or others for example IMHO. All too often I’m hearing the LA or NY clones vying for attention over the other promoting their homogenous style with less attention to the music tossing in effects to colour it. Being musical as in this album gets my attention. For all the reasons known to the music industry, I seldom use popularity as a reason for acceptance.

Q-Tip’s album I dig. Nicely done, some very cool interpretation and execution with the music, and well thought out. For me, it’s one that I could listen to more often than many, considering a lot of rap doesn’t get my attention once, let alone twice. The good stuff I find is, well, far apart from the bleh. Too bad members of the audience accept rap/hip-hop just because it’s played. 60, 80, 100, 120, or 160BPM that’ll do it. How do I know? Every funky drummer knows that.

No biggie though. All genres are guilty of that less concerned interest. I think rap, especially indie, due to today’s ease of mass production (some good and a lot terrible because somebody isn't paying attention so it doesn’t become obvious or matter), easy extensive distribution, and cultural and social exposure gets a little extra attention in that arena, though. I wonder how there got to be so many artists that hold longevity in the art today? Celebrity red carpet status or excellence? Production wise, why not cover all the bases for excellence? Time and effort costs money. Rap and hip-hop has a blank check today with little effort need be. Thankfully, there are some who are artists, and that will never change.

You’ve shown good taste to prove a point. Thanks, for posting better rap, Rev’. I’m now convinced there are gems amongst the rubble out there.

Keep it funky.

I agree with all of your points.

I refer to Jay Z, Beyonce, etc as the sound of rented bling.

If you think about it from a financial perspective it's kinda like early 90's instrumental guitar rock.

If you look at that period affordable home recording equipment, multi effect units and drum machines came on to a market so a musician could make an album in his bedroom by himself no need to pay for expensive studios. Remember Shrapnel Records that used to advertise on the inside cover of "Guitar for the Practicing Musician"?

Now look at pop/hip hop. Since everything from recording to processing is done in box there's no need for room ambience, with non destructive editing you can move everything on a grid to make the timing perfect, you can even use autotune so the singer doesn't even have to be able to sing in tune. Pretty much you can record most top 10 pop music in a closet. Low overhead, less to lose if it tanks, more to make if it takes off. Plus most Mac's come with a DAW standard. If you want to go better you can get a beginner set up for less than a grand that can still have almost professional sound.

Here's one of Q-Tips better known production jobs:

I saw an interview with Joni Mitchell where she talked about loving this song.

The thing is I listen to it a lot as background music at work. I kinda liken getting to know it like learning to cook and taste food. Anyone can eat chocolate but to learn how to let it melt in your mouth and savor the subtleties takes some time and sometimes a little coaching.

Thanks, for the kind reply, Rev’. Nice to know I’m getting to have a better feel for rap and hip-hop. :P You have good taste in those genres, I figure.

I can see Joni liking Q-Tip and Janet’s funky version. Joni has a lot of savvy, and is one exceptional songwriter. She didn’t attain greatness by living in a box. Q-Tip’s version is a great example of making another’s hit song and/or performance your own. That also makes it more memorable in my books YMMV.

I don't want to put down home recording or cover tunes whether live or not. Music is a business for sure; but, it should also be fun. Many confuse fun with excellence. Fun and excellence can be opposed to each other or together as one. Tools are simply that - tools. I don’t care how it gets made as long as it has realism and know how. It doesn’t have to be perfect, audiophile quality, or follow rules. I have collected recordings like early 1900s prison vocals, roadside chain gang chants, and Buddy Holly’s cardboard box beat. To me that’s hip The Beatles and George Martin got it.

There's a whole sub genre called Lo Fi Hip Hop where producers will go so far as re tracking parts through a cassette 4 track. There are certain elements of it that have their own cliches. For example you will hear the same Chet Baker and Vince Guiraldi samples, rain sounds, and movie dialog samples paired with Japanese Anime imagery:

BTW I see your Marky Mark and raise you:

Fun fact Snow was in jail in Toronto after a Bar Fight when this was added to heavy rotation on MTV.

Speaking of Stanley Clarke and Qtip:

Imposter  Hilarious, Rev’. Great segue. At first I thought I was watching Jim Carrey impersonating Snow doing Al Yankovic in front of a Sesame Street set. Funny stuff.
You get the pot. :P

Thanks. That was such a classic bit.

I'd personally like to thank Canada for Jim Carrey, The Red Green Show, Second City and The Trailer Park Boys.

Thank you Bill, your band is funktastic.
This right here is real music, listen and learn. No pro-tools, no auto-tune, no gimmicks, no gadgets just real people layin' down some funk.
