Speaking of classic vocal groups:

Zappa was a huge Doo Wop fan.

Speaking of Zappa he could even make odd meters FUnky:

Another gone artist who IMHO should've been a legend:

Amy Winehouse's condition lead to Sharon Jones being better known.

Amy Winehouse's Producer heard the first Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings album and hired them to back her up. When Winehouse wasn't allowed to come into the US Dap Kings bassist and Band Leader Bosco Jones stepped up and got Sharon Jones to do the shows in her place.

She died in 2016 of Bile Duct Cancer.

I admit sometimes I can be pedantic here. I love the history as much as I love the music.

On that note here's a couple of videos I stumbled on the other day:

Yup! That’s a fact, Jack and SBLS. :P
I was listening to some of my old collections the other day. Most were for family gatherings or posterity so I listen to them seldom now; but, it’s still fun on the odd occasion. Hoagy Carmichael is part of that grouping.

Stardust might not be funky today; but, it certainly was back in the day. It still gets played and performed. That’s not too bad for a song, which if still around six years from now, will have lasted at least 100 years! Now that’s historically pretty funky, and it rocks. 8)

Just a thought. I haven’t done the calculations or accounting but, going out on a limb without doing the extensive homework required, I have a feeling that, generally speaking, hip or protest music doesn’t gather the longevity and/or popularity (at least in it’s original form) of sad and/or romantic songs. That includes classical (perhaps), blues/jazz, country, and rock. It could be because trends come and go and yet the those straight to the heart songs bypass the latest greatest vibes and keep on going. Okay. I’ll concede the beat goes on. Big difference of here today gone tomorrow versus here yesterday and still here tomorrow. Then again, for a fast buck . . .

Since you mentioned protest music:

This kinda sets up for 90's FUnk Metal:

When I hear this stuff I can't help but think that Metallica isn't fully utilizing Robert Trujillo's talents.

Hoagy is great FSB. Those were some innovative times and it was musicians coming up with the ideas. Perhaps that might have something to do with longevity in the ears of a listener. I believe you have a point about love songs as well. One can be in love every minute of every day and it is good for the soul. Try that being mad and you won't last very long.
Rev J, the 90's had a huge number of talented bands not many left. I call it victims of their own circumstances. Money plus stupid equals 0. The chilli peps are a funk band for sure.

okay, lets get it going again

For whatever reason I always associate the Isley Brothers with Sam and Dave. Here's a classic Jaco track featuring Sam and Dave:

Sam and Dave hadn't even talked in years when they recorded this.

Thank you Rev J x3. Jaco, wicked wonderful bass guitar player. As much joy as he brought and how crushed at the news of his passing on, don't know what to say after that. Sam and Dave. Thank you Brother, brings back the school daze. A hat trick RJ.

Thanks for the Joe Walsh. Classic tune from a classic movie.

I kinda want to go on a weird tangent.

I posted Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves. Their Bassist from that period was Robert Trujillo who is now Bassist for Metallica and produced the Jaco Documentary. I've also posted some Hip Hop on here as I view it as a child of FUnk.

So there's the set up for these 2 videos:

In the Jaco documentary rapper Tech N9ne was interviewed and said he wanted to see if he could match Jaco's flow on Kuru. This is what came out:

How about some old school African FUnk:

Now for a tale of circular influence. Fela was very influenced by James Brown. When James Brown was in Zaire playing at the Mohammed Ali, George Foreman "Rumble in the Jungle" Bootsy Collins who was playing bass for Brown Heard Fela and it inspired him to write this:
