Good one, Rollie. I had to play it a second time to listen to the song. The first time I was just staring at the gorgeous car.

Whoo boy! Not another one. What are you guys trying to do with putting all those cover girl babes on my phone? Trying to put me in the doghouse if Mrs. FSB sees them? Good thing my playlist doesn’t only have those album covers.
The music is very funky and cool, SBLS. Actually, Mrs. FSB is pretty cool too, so no worries.

Who be callin' who a Jive Turkey? Can't be me. I gave up that dancin' stuff at the last wedding. Now I just bob my head, raise my arms, and bounce up and down. Once in a while I shout "Hallelujah!" just to stir it up for fun.

Now that was getting down big time, Rollie. Those brothas and sistas sure had the moves.

Mrs. FSB was a very good hairdresser when I met her, and consequently, until she changed professions (phew!), I was her guineau pig. For a brief time I got the Afro, the perm, the shirt, bell bottom pants, white belt, and the black and white saddle type platform shoes. I stopped at her jokingly suggestion to curl my eyelashes, and I passed by the mullet. Long before that, funk was a contrast from, reluctantly at my family’s request, my earlier winning of a twist contest (gawd I’m old) in front of a whole town at a festival. I didn’t know I’d won until I looked around to see nobody else with a number pinned to their back dancing around me. Also, the polyester look was a big change from blue jean strides, motorcycle boots, ducktail with side burns, cigarettes in my rolled up t-shirt, and James Dean jacket with turned up collar. Then with some English blood in my veins there was my Nehru British look, turtle neck and jade Buddha around the neck, bespectacled with coloured shades

I loved funk music, and funk drumming, so I jumped on the Soul Train ride. Later, I ran into Cheech and Chong, finally dumped the swag, had my curly hair shoulder length, and just grooved to the music, and always this guy of course:

Nobody, including Michael who is the best with his style, funky dances better than JB IMHO. Maybe, as good, but not better. But, then again he had Clayton Fillyau, John ‘Jabo’ Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, Melvin Parker, Bootsy Collins, Bernard Odum, Fred Thomas and alike laying down the percussion and bass groove for him.

The man who can:
James Brown. James Brown y’all. Let’s hear it for Mr. James Brown!

Hmmm? I wonder what silver white hair would look like with an Afro. Naw, “Fuggedabout it!”. I’m a soul man without it.

Since FSB and I were discussing Hip Hop on another thread and I'm of the opinion that a lot of Hip Hop is just an extension of the FUnk. I thought I'd post this here.

This is 3 versions of the same song:

The first version is the original (built with samples):

The second is a cover with the samples orchestrated for live musicians:

And vocal with a live band:

Hey there, Rev’. Now that rap and vibe is good sh*t. IMHO. Definitely, old school with new school. I don’t say this often, but that rap ain’t crap. Inventive run on the lyrics is one thing, but tempo and delivery counts too, and the music is über important, not just the beat. Madvillian met that criteria. IMO. YMMV. Two thumbs up.

It’s in the pocket with some of the best funky traps I’ve heard, single stroke rolls and all. With some bias I’ll add that one can’t get down live to sampled drums like grooving with that funky drummer. Well, you could, but only if you aren’t feeling the performance. Buddy Rich, Clyde Stubblefield, Jim Payne, and others can prove that as did Mark Colenburg here. On the other hand, sampled percussion with live drumming is pretty common today. Recording with samples is in another arena, and does just fine throughout. But, kudos to all the members that produced this great combination of groove (the second my choice).

Thanks, for posting. Funk is in da blood and ain’t going nowhere. As for rap, I’m now a believer; but, now you made me even more fussy about it, Rev’. The bad will remain bad. Formulas for a hit song are not new, and yet the days of one hit wonders have mostly been replaced with celebrity and the red carpet. How did that happen (even heavily promoted Elvis had his moments of success in jeopardy)? You can bet it was the music for Presley’s downfall and recovery. Today’s red carpet adoration continues with rap and hip hop taking every carpet out there. Are all those songs and performers great, or is it the videos and the stage show? Maybe, I’m missing it. The guitar bands’ other genres are still critiqued heavily both by press and public. Getting that successful album means maybe they aren’t meeting the expectation. Maybe, their stage show sucks or maybe both. Perhaps, Prince said it best, “You’ve Got The Look”.

My fear is that great songs that gave fruit before will get infected with rap to capitalize on it without worthiness. That’s different than portioned samples to create something altogether new.

In short, I fear that, if the present pop situation is a model, acceptance of trending examples from the less music educated or savvy or less appreciative or simply oblivious, and, perhaps, those who just follow in the footsteps of promotional popularity, to be cool with the crowd or just for the bank account, unless it is worthy to begin with, it will bring mediocrity or worse to the music industry. There is always a risk of losing something great, and these days it may not have a successful return as music taste is becoming more fragmented. Ask the old school Country fans how it’s going. Blues and Jazz has been there. So has Surf and Disco and . . . Fortunately, sub genres have developed, and sometimes those tunes have added rap for new exposure. I’ll bow out on that one.

The good material, including rap. should take center stage; however, it doesn’t always sell so it gets put in the discount bin. With each decade, for a variety of reasons as with the music of the day, there is sure to be excellent music of these times looked over, and it will not get from here to there. It’s typical of much music. It happened with Classical music too, only to be rediscovered. Reminds me of the question, “If a tree falls in the forest and there is no one there to hear it, does it make a sound?”

This Forum (like this funky thread) certainly helps to rectify missing out by bringing obscure, alternative, original, historical, and liked choices to attention, sorting out all sorts of good stuff. The Internet holds a lot of those discounted gems that would have been destroyed, and maybe some should be. 8)
Lastly, at the risk of shaking the apples from the tree, is rap in and of itself Rock? I think not. One thing I’m positive about is that it is not Rock and Roll. Some Rock doesn’t qualify either as Rock ‘N’ Roll if there’s no roll with the swag. Can Rap or EDM be qualified as mood music? It does put one in a mood and repetition is prevalent. Can’t say; but, here’s food for thought, mood music can certainly be looped at any tempo. Definition is probably best left to the beholder, but then again acceptance would be true also.

Still, Mrs. FSB won’t let me wear shorts below the knees, and the gold alarm clock around my neck has to go. :P
Rap? Wird (is that weird or word?) Just kiddin’.

Peace!
FSB

Yeah, I first MF DOOM (the Villain of Madvillian) on a Thundercat, Flying Lotus channel on Pandora. After dong some research he talks about wearing the mask onstage and in pictures as a reaction to how hip hop got to the point where image got to be more important than content.

Here's a great track about that:

"Shut up with your shuttin' up,
Put on a shirt at least a button up,
To many rappers look like strippin' males,
Spittin' nails,
A bunch of out of work Jerks,
Since they shut down Chippendales,"

Yowza! That reminds me of novelty songs of the past. Definitely a talent and a great example. Thanks, for the mask explanation and funk, Rev’.

This one is to pay respect for Aretha.

Original:

Basic remix:

Full blown rapping version. I think the editing is a little sloppy, but the idea is there.

I get it now, Rev J. Some very good stuff out there. Very cool - in the right hands. Still crap - in the wrong hands. That holds true for most music, however.
The videos I just added? Pretty easy when the original is great as it is alone, and all too often, others will do the same or similar. That’s okay if you want that. Record companies love to capitalize on cheaper production, and others want to have what they can’t do. A tempo change may be all the audience desires. Sometimes, the remix is way better than the original, but not often IMHO. It’s just okay or worse. It certainly doesn’t make for a better live performance when the key individual is missing. :P
There is a danger that the one that does the rap version isn’t as qualified or able to do the equal job of the original master producer. It takes a lot of attention to master a good final product with loops and samples. Think of it this way. It’s like different tracks coming from a variety of sources and then played together. When it works, it can be a thing of beauty. When it doesn’t, it can be a mess.

No biggie in most cases. We’re not talking Deutsche Grammaphon here. :P
We’re not talking Caruso either.
It starts with a song. Make it good and make it your own. YMMV

The thing is I always like to say Aretha sounded like Aretha. Beyonce doesn't sound like Beyonce. What that means is If you put a mic in front of Aretha and counted her in it would sound like Aretha. If you put Beyonce in front of a mic counted her in, took 20 takes, comped them, ran it through a few thousand dollars worth of outboard equipment and plug ins then it would sound like Beyonce.

Regarding commercial hip hop vs what I posted I'm gonna make a beer analogy.

Bud Light has their new ad campaign "For the many. Not for the few." That to me is the majority of pop music be it Ariana Grande or Jay Z. It's kinda watered down and made palatable for mass consumption.

Then there's the stuff I've posted. To me that's more like small batch craft brews. For people who care about quality and don't want it watered down or spoon fed to them.

Since you posted Mos Def. I'm gonna share this interview:

Technically this is Neo Soul but it sounds like FUnk to me
