Both guitar players in our band use solid state. I'm spoiled to my Roland JC-50. Ryan loves his VOX Valvetronix. On their own, the VOX has more versatility. I just love the sound of my JC-50 and I use a pedal board. Different animals, both very good amps.

1973-1977
Amp Type
Solid-State Head

I have a Roland Cube, it's nice. It needs a pedal or boost in front of it, it can sound a little flat without it.

A long time ago (15 years) I had a SS power amp that was awesome, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. It was a black rack mount unit that took 2 slots and had yellow letters in cursive across the front. I think it was a 2 channel 150 watt per channel. If any one knows what it is I sure would like to know.

Edit: Did a little searching, I believe it was a MosValve. That was a great unit.

They're getting a bit old now but the Fender Princeton Chorus was a beautiful sounding SS amp. 2x10, spring reverb, chorus, FX loop. Nice.

Howdy!

I have a signed (by the man himself) Marshall VS100R...

Image

Built like a tank but not the greatest amps sounding Marshall made IMO. The 2 OD channels lend themselves to the heavier side of music but with a 100w of head room, the clean channel stays... freak'in loud but clean! Nice reverb too.

Cheers!

Andy

The Roland JC series works fine for piano/synth work.

Roland makes nice SS amps. A micro cube was my first real amp and the cube series is great for the price. My favorite SS amps are actually the Fender Mustang series now though. I blown away by the first $99 one that arrived at the shop. I've actually been toying with the idea of getting a Mustang III someday even though I'm a die hard tube amp player. I actually know a guy who has been playing at a pro level for about forty years who is thinking of buying a couple and gigging with them while leaving his $2000 Rivera at home.

For a small, versatile one with a fair bunch of power, this picker uses a Line 6 Spider Jam. Lots and lots of effects, good enough for these ears.

You forgot about tubes; those buggers are pricey!

I've never had the pleasure to try a Roland Jazz Chorus, but leaning heavy towards the Fender Twin as my all time fav. / go-to sound for it's thick, chime'y cleans and lush reverb.... I've been told I'd probably love the Roland JC.

As for what I do know and have, I love my Fender Ultimate Chorus. It doesn't rival any run of the mill tube based Fender for cleans when you que the chorus with it's stereo output, it's something to behold. It's something unlike I've ever heard from any other amp.... glorious, that is if you are looking to add chorus to something. But, really, the stereo output makes it special. I find stereo amps add a whole other dimension to their reverb sound, and this one on even another level with the chorus.

For small clubs and practice I have my Roland 55 Jazz Chorus combo (Amp and chorus is stereo), for a little more power I use the Marshall 8100 100 watt head with 1960 A & B cab. To get my point across I use the Marshall 150 watt AVT head with the 1960 A & B cab but if I want my guitars to sing it has to be my all tube 30 watt Peavey Delta Blues 115 combo with one of the 1960 cabs for extention. Now if I want to rip the walls down it must be the all tube 120 watt Peavey Triple XXX 212 combo with one of the 1960 cabs for extension, but that is just me!! 8)

I am quite partial to my Ampeg SS-140C.
Two channels with stereo chorus and two channels of reverb.
Does everything from screaming distorted metal to smooth clean tones.

Try a Line 6 Spider Jam 150. They sound pretty good - built in tweeter.
