He certainly is a genius and great artist. I put him in the same catagory as Jim Croce and these types are fine artists and while they are not great guitarists, thier talent on the instrument fits perfectly with what they do. They did create thier own catagory of music...the singer songwriter. If someone tells you they don't like James Taylor or Jim Croce, they have no inner Soul!

Thanks for posting, had not listened to some JT in a while!

Croce and JT are two of my favorite alltime musicians and song writers. Timeless music! Hard to find many as good nowadays.

Virtuosity can be found in the writing of a song, not just in setting fretboards on fire. James Taylor has a great voice and is a great guitar player. :)

Never liked any of his music, too laid back and it's so boring it'd send you to sleep. I really dislike that type of stuff.

Great songwriter, interesting guitarist. Undoubtedly talented.

I like a couple of his songs, but for some reason, I just don't get into him too much. I don't run out of the room screaming, but I rarely make it through more than one song.

James Taylor has a simplistic minimulist style of finger picking that really suits his voice and his style of music.I have always liked James Taylor although I don't have any of his recordings-I guess that I should pick up a copy of Sweet Baby James just for posterity's sake.

I think the bottom line is that his vocals go really well with the simple chords that are played. Everything sounds just right . . . . and perfect.

He plays guitar therefore he is a guitarist. Virtuosity has nothing to do with it. Even if he only plays three string cords he a guitarist and a musician. I like some of his stuff. Knowing a million chord patterns is useful but not essential to being a guitarist.

Great singer and song writer. His talent on guitar is the way he embellishes the chords to feed the melody. Not as simple as it sounds. I would call him a chord/rhythm master. When you're ready to chill JT rules. Everyone respects BB King even though he played much more "simple" phrases compared to SRV. That goes to show that it's not how technically complex it is that makes it good. It's their ability to convey emotion through their music in a way that people relate with and love.

Although I'm not a fan, I appreciate his style and talent, as a singer and guitarist. He is without a doubt one of the best. He's not a Rocker or a Blues Man. Just a maker of Beautiful Music, and you cant get any better than that. Not to mention that he has been doing just that for decades. 8)

JT: great songwriter, as well as a fine singer and guitar player! Much more of a musician in my eyes than a whole lot of other guys who can play a million notes a minute on a guitar but not in any way that's interesting.

Speed and fretboard mastery are certainly worthwhile goals but they're not the end-all-be-all to being a great guitarist and certainly not to being a great musician.
