Yeah i can't stand that crap either. I saw something the other day and it was some guitar dealer or something and he said that he will only sell to people he knows are going to use and play these vintage pieces. He says if it's some lawyer or something gonna just buy it to stick it in a vault and deny real musicians the chance to use it, then no deal.

There are dozens-maybe hundreds-of non-playing hoarders in Japan and now China who are collecting valuable vintage guitars just to keep the price artificially inflated so that they can make bundles while the serious musicians who would truly appreciate such a fine instrument has to do without. The whole thought of it makes me wretch.

It really sucks. I hate seeing wallhanger guitars.

Also, in the computer repair business, people are really wasteful, but it turns to personal gain for me and my boss alike. Yesterday, I got a free netbook, only one year old. It's a Dell, and the kid paid $350 for it new. It was loaded with bloatware and viruses, a simple fix, tbh. He was going to smash it because he didn't know how to fix it. I took advantage of the situation, and now I'm using it as my living room PC. Also, about 7 months ago, my boss got a $400 Sony Vaio for free. He has a friend that works in trash sorting, and pulled it out before it was put into the grinder/recycling plant. It had no problems. The previous owner had upgraded to Windows 7 as well. And there were no personal files or any history, so it was obviously a fresh install.

I certainly understand folks being upset that non serious musicians (rich guys, with more money than talent) drive up prices of vintage guitars. But to be honest even if I had my 62 Sunburst Strat back, I certainly wouldn't play it in a club...and isn't that the real value of the guitar?

I think that is where Fender did the smartest move they have made since Leo owned the Company. Coming up with the Vintage Reissues was a true stroke of genius. Nearly every guitar I own is a reissue of some sort and all play and sound fantastic...and 99% of the people most of us would play in front of wouldn't know, care, or even be able to tell. So if someone wants to brag about thier Vintage 60 Les Paul, let em...if that is all thier hagning thier lives on, I feel sorry for those types. Don't get me wrong I would love to own more vintage guitars, but I enjoy the ones I have, they are tools at the end of the day and still inspire me to play em :!:

FWIW

I can't stand non-playing collectors either...and after owning and playing vintage guitars myself,I agree with T2Stratman,my favorites to own and play now are the Vintage reissues, they have mostly the same vibe...I love them.

^^^ Couldn't have said it better guitslinger. It's the same with real incredible vintage amps, old fenders real classic pieces and people are buying these things not to play but to keep as like a museum piece or in a vault somewhere, it's sickening. Same with 58, 59 Les Paul's; you could hardly get one now, even if you have the money as so many of them are getting bought up by rich accountant's, lawyers and what have you, as status symbols to hang on a wall and brag about. Most don't get used by a proper musician which is a real shame and defeats the whole purpose of the instrument IMO.

To my eyes they have to be played and enjoyed, not just treated as possessions.

There is a great Les Paul collection on the net on YT by Tom Wittrock and he has some incredible pieces, difference with him is he's an actual musician that plays the guitar and enjoys his guitars, so many of these people don't even play who are taking these instruments out of the reach of players. They buy them up then they sit and don't get utilised. Now that does drive me mad

i know people who have 2000.00 guitars and can hardly play

me- i have an mim strat and epi nighthawk. been playing over 50 years, and these are good enough for me. i can play them out and not have to worry that some little scratch will devalue them

I definitely understand your feelings, but couldn't you say the same thing about people who collect guitars? I mean, even if you're a musician, you can only play one at a time, so what number would be too many? So would you say someone having, say 20-30 guitars is depriving someone else of being able to actually play some of them?

Either way, it's a shame to let them go unplayed.

I don't know about vintage guitars,
but I know a girl, an ex-bestfriend of mine, and she's always bragging about how she has a guitar, and how she can play, blah blah blah. When I went over to her house, when we were friends, of course, I wanted to see her guitar, and hear her play, of course, it's a squire strat, I don't know the specifics, and she's a beauty, but she has to dust off the bag she's in before she can get the dang thing out! I was messin' around and playin' it, and I kept getting these dirty looks from her (this was WAY before I had any experiences with playing an electric guitar) and so I asked her to show me something then. her response was, not right now, you wanna coke? she just like didn't wanna play. then, when she was at my place, my guitar was sitting in the corner where she always is, and I pulled her out for my nightly jam, and I offered to let her play, she supposedly played guitar, and playing with people is always more fun. she wouldn't even touch her. These kind of people piss me off more than collectors do.the ones who claim to be musicians and claim to play. I know I'm not that good. I'm nowhere CLOSE, but I play, and I try, and I have the want to to play, and the passion.
the way you can tell if she (or anyone else) plays, get their fretting hand, and look at their fingers. nothin' on hers. mine dang sure do show it. not as much as many, but still. the evidence is there.
I really dispise this chick.
