Well for $150 tomorrow im getting an Epiphone SG G-400 Vintage in a Cherry finish. It is a little personalized for the original owner(he had a wave, billabong like, logo carved into the body) but besides that its a beauty. Havent played it yet, but i did take a visit to GC and got to play the exact type of guitar to my liking. Nice raised Alnico pickups, good sustain, chunkier tone, a kinda standard versatility to it, good tuners, light weight, and can obviously take some serious rockin. I really want it for slide playing, just to have a second guitar besides a single coil, and to fufill my love for Robby Krieger 8) . Just wondering any problems or any pros of this guitar from your personal experiences? Any info would be very beneficial. Thanks and Happy New Years, good mojo to you!

you cant go wrong with epiphones SG. great choice. only flaw i can think of is when your standing up it isn't stable, meaning if your not holding it, the neck tilts to the ground. you'll get used to it though.
great guitar, you'll enjoy

former room mate had one, I wanted to buy it from him, he wouldn't sell.

IMO (humble though it may not be,) Epiphone SG's are darn fine.

like the above poster stated the balance differently than a fender so until you get used to it remember that it is neck heavy. Gibson style headstocks are more apt to break if you drop the guitar on them. just keep that in mind so you don't run into trouble.

Hi N.C. that's a good price for a G-400,I have the G-400 Custom which is basically the same guitar but with 3 pups and gold hardware.I find that my G-400 has an excellent range in the types of music you can play on it.It's great for blues and classic rock but is also great for smooth jazzy licks,it can also used quite well for heavy metal too if you're so inclined. For sound and playability it's hard to beat the G-400,it's just a very versatile guitar.

The only downside to the G-400s and S.G.s in general is the neck dive caused from the guitar's neck being poorly balanced and the headstock being too heavy. You can easily remedy this with a strap from these guys that has counterweights in them to help balance the body and neck. http://www.headsupstrap.com

Thanks guys, and indeed I will post pics Sunday evening, i did indeed notice the odd placement of the strap holder, so Ive been anticipating some getting used to there, i guess why that explains why Krieger always stood like a statue with his guitar tilted up

Oh and btw, it is a (as of tonights new year) 6 years old, so probably a 2006-07 model, idk anything about Epiphone's factory production or change or variety of materials from year to year. Im guessing very little because the wood on his SG is mahogany as well and all the hardware is identical to the current models.

I've tried a few of them out on different occasions and would have to say they compare very nicely to the Gibson SG only dislike is the previously mentioned tendency to nose dive other than that it would make an excelent guitar for slide.

hi , i've had an sg for a good few years now , it started off as a good guitar , now it's excelent 8) , i love it for it's light wieght (when my back is killing me ) and since ripping the guts out and rewiring it 50@s style with pio caps and a set of gibson 498 -500t ceramic pups, the thing destroys gibson sg's ,i usually just plug it into the jcm 800 with the gain turned up , no need for o/d pedals with this mother :D it actually sounded better than the les paul studio i had 8) , and as for the neck dive , get a set of vintage style green tulip tuners , much lighter than the standard grover tuners , the neck dive is gone 8) , enjoy your new guit , your gonna love it  , cheers
Alan

Well guys didnt get it today, the tail piece was detached and went missing, thus my friend is going to GC, get a new tailpiece, get it restrung, and have everything all nifftied up. A few scratches of course, nothing some dunlop polish wont make pretty, the female jack has had some complications in terms of loose ness, but ive dealt with that before. All in all im getting a good deal for a new haggled down price of $125. I mean with the $25 I saved I should be able to pretty it up a bit with a nice dusting, polish, yknow the works. It has new knobs, the same Alnico pickups as on the current models, Grover tuners, so everything looks good. Im getting it next Sunday so bare with me

I had an Epi Prophecy EX SG, fancy quilt cap and EMGs but otherwise an Epi SG, it was a very enjoyable and reliable guitar. The only reason I sold it was because I started gassing for a Jackson DK2M.

I may be the odd man out here.... I played a buddies Gibson SG a number of years ago, and recently tried out a Epi G-400 in a music store. Honest: I don't care for them.

* Great sounding hard rock guitars. You instantly get a Tony Iommi Black Sabbath vibe when you pick one up. Right away you start jamming to Iron Man or Paranoid! LOL...

* Real thin body, possibly the thinnest solid body guitar - even more sleek & slim than a Strat or Tele.

* Real heavy neck & headstock. The "neck dive" that people talk about, is a real distraction and honest... Makes it a pain in the butt to play, unless you get a special strap or something to offset the heavy neck and/or "neck dive".

I forgot to mention in my previous post that my daughter's boyfriend has an '02 Gibson SG and he prefers my G-400 in every way especially the sound and the playability-he says that it feels more sturdy without being heavier. He also says that the fit and finish is way superior to the Gibson too,I've seen a lot of that lately where Epi guitars equal or even surpass their Gibson counterparts in many ways.
