have you heard of kinman pickups?
they're hum-cancelling and IMO are the closest thing to a real single coil, (just listen to his sound clips and customer reviews)

i suggest you try these out before you go labelling all hum-cancelling pickups as "creamy and bland" cause i think this guy has "gotten there!"

I have played through bouh pickups, they both do sound great, but do sound differnt. For my likings i donot prefer the noiseless pu's. I use an old tube amp. with alot of pedals, and crank up my pu's as hi as i can with you interference. I expect noise, i embrace it, and enjoy it. That is part of the vintage feel to me. If i wanted everything silent, i would go digital, I dont, so there for i stick to my old LOUD & NOISY PU's works for me...... I know most wont agree, but like I said it works for me!

The clips of Kinman's hum reduced pickups do sound good and better than any I've played. I haven't played them because they're in Australia and the pickups can't be tried out here. My worry was about would they work, and have you seen the prices? I've been suggesting Fender should buy Kinman or team up with him like Bill Lawrence if his stuff's as good as it looks. Bill Lawrence and Fender went with a different "modern" vibe with the SCNs. Some people like SCNs. I could never put my finger on what was bugging me about them but they just sounded wrong to me and so I shied away from getting them. Kinman's site is a real education. Even though the electronic measurement things sound really good on the SCNs, they are just not going to sound exactly like vintage Alnico pickups that I love. Kinman's site's a real education. I read it a while ago.

I'm thinking about changing my cs's pu's to Kinman woodstock plus
and putting my cs '69s in my deluxe players strat, and prob get another mex or a hw1 for the vintage noiseless from my deluxe player (as firstmeasure mentioned vintage noiseless are great for Gilmour sounds, and who got better tone than Mr. G??)
Those kinman audio samples are the best marketing I've encountered  (and that's even though I have went to business school)

All this talk of Magic makes me want to put some Fat 50's or 69's in my '88 Strat. It needs new pick ups, anyway. I was going to put CSN's in it, but I like the Vintage Noisless better, and no use having two guitars with the same pick ups. I've been basing my opinion on the standard pick ups my '88 came with, I'd better try some Old Fashioned ones.

Maybe I'll do like Time Machine and Switch the Vintage Noisless out of my Deluxe Players Strat into my '88, then put the 50's in the Player. Leaving my Buddy Guy well enough alone.

I think the Kinman are the way to go if you have the money.
The second step down would be the Dimarzio Area 58 (61 or 67). Thats what I have and i'm very impressed. They sound more like the kinman blues set in my opinion. It's tempting to get that woodstock plus set but I can't quite justify the cost and I like what I have very much. I just lust for other pickups :)

I've got to say, the CSs are the way to go from my ear. I've got a CS something in my Squier (long story - a friend of a friend of a friend "tuned it up" when I bought it, because the friend of a friend was his lady). I'm not sure if it's a CS Fat50, or a CS 50s, because it's basically a CS surprise, but the way it lights up my Blues Junior is supernatural. I believe it's a Fat 50 from what I hazily recall - talking about the neck because that's what I play. It's like chiming chorus and a fat blues tone for bending. It's in a different league than the Highway One pickups, although the Highway Ones can chuck and chime some, and especially have excellent glassy tone with high gain. I'll miss the glassy high-gain tone, but need those supernatural 50s to light up my Blues Junior. Kinman's sound better, but really I just don't believe they can be or will be as sweet as the Fat50s modeled on Fender 58s, and noiseless ultimately is just not that much weight for me.

I meant to say Kinmans sound better in the video clip than other noiseless I've heard and the SCN comparison is devastating. Kinmans over the computer sound comparable to classic Fender tone. What's great about Fender CS tone is it's not just like Fender tone - it is Fender tone one hundred percent. I'm sold on the CS and I'm looking forward to getting them.

I'm going with Custom Shop Fat50s. Man, just try to find them. Nobody's got them. SCNs are everywhere. Every store's got them and is pushing them. SRVs are around too. GC's doing clearance on Fat50s. Call up Fender to special order and what do they say? Oh yeah those are our best. Is everyone deaf?

Try Acme Guitar....they have them. CS Fat 50's are super sweet.

Fat 50s in today and picked them up. I want to get them in right away but I'm waiting for a call back from the ace guitar guy. Who knows when I'll ever be able to get them installed.

Dead neck pickup on the brand new Fender Custom Shop Fat 50s. Brilliant. Now, out plenty of money and the guitar doesn't work.

I hope you bought them from a reputable dealer who will replace them.

I bought them at Guitar Center in San Bernardino, and had them installed at Wild West Guitars in Riverside, CA. Since Wild West is a top-of-the-line place, I'm not worried at all that the ace guitar guy F'd them up. In fact, he's so cool he's not charging me extra for pulling them out and putting in the new ones, and gave me some springs to get my old Squier up and running. Wild West's guitar guy is very, very cool.

However, I'm in the middle of a major cluster caught between Guitar Center and Fender. Guitar Center sells the Fat50s in sets of three, special order only. Now, I have two out of three that work, and sound good according to the ace guitar guy (doing sound for Starship tomorrow). It's all torn apart so I haven't heard it yet. Anyway, so to get one that works, I may have to pull out all three and send them back, and now I'm concerned the next set will have a dud too. What are the odds of getting three that work? Whichever way I have to do it, I think Guitar Center will work with me since it's a GC account I'm using.

I'm very, very dissapointed in Fender's Custom Shop quality. I can tell you, if I had imagined I would be in this major hassle trying to get Fender to send Guitar Center a pickup or a good set, I would have gone elsewhere. Dimarzio 58s and a 61 in the bridge might have been the way I went instead, trading a little tone for noiseless but at a reasonable price. It's all a give and take. Since I'm a huge fan of Fender and classic Fender tone, it's a very sad day to me. Will the next set work? I'll let you know.
