I've been shopping for a nice Tremolo Pedal to run through my HRD. Don't want to spend the $80+ bucks for a BOSS TR-2. I want a nice 60's-70's tone without the "Bells & Whistles" and not bust the wallet. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
Best Regards,
Michael

HAPPY NEW YEAR! (I hope it will be better than 2011)

Here you go.

Dano makes some decent sounding pedals for the price as long as you don't go jumping up and down on them.

I had a BOSS TR-2. I also had a VooDoo Labs Tremolo for a while as well. They do work. Never tried the Dano.

Just so you know .... when you're finished with the entry level stuff and you're ready to graduate to the real thing, this is the one you want. Jump up and down all you like.

I have the MF house brand Rogue tremolo pedal and it is a pretty nice little pedal. You can catch them on sale for like $25-$30 sometimes. I'm using it as a place holder till I get my STRYMON Lex Rotary. But that is $300

I use a Danelectro Cool Cat Tremolo pedal,it has the real 60s Fender Twin style tremolo and costs only around $50.The intensity can go from very subtle to full on throb like in the Smith's: How Soon Is Now?

Have heard nothing but good things about the Dan Electro Tremolo pedals for the price. The Tuna Melt has a plastic case but the Cool Cat Trem is metal. I'll probably go for the metal one. They have them on Amazon for $35-$39 bucks...

Hi Bluesbreaker: I hear what you are saying about the TR-2, but there might be a reason it is so ubiquitous; it has become kind of a definitive unit. In the depths of my foggy memory I have a vague notion I saw Brian Setzer using one once, and if it's good enough for that retro-minded gentleman... You could always pick one up in good condition and very affordably on EBay.

Otherwise, just to add to the list of ultra-budget names, there are always the Behringer UT-100 and UT-300 pedals to look at. Cheap as chips and perfectly serviceable for home use.

By the way, while we're talking tremolos do any of the gizmologists here happen to know what unit Joe Bonamassa used on the studio take of Dust Bowl? That's a tremolo sound to die for, to my ears...

Cheers - C

Hi Ceri,
I love checking out pedal boards. To get those sounds on Dust Bowl Joe used an H&K Rotosphere and a Fulltone Super Trem.

Wow, that's a good bit of info, Steve; thanks!

And a Rotosphere as well, huh? That boy has been through more Leslie simulators than most of us could shake a stick at. I wonder if this is the end of the journey - or if one day we'll see him give in and start dragging the real thing around the circuit?

Cheers - C

Personally I use the TR-2 and love it. I was very fortunate to have the rhythm guitarist/singer my church band let me keep one.

At the shop where I work we have some Guyatone micro series pedals, including a tremolo. They're decent pedals, built fairly well, made in Japan. If you can't afford a TR-2 they're a little cheaper, especially used. But they still aren't the same as a TR-2, so if you can find one used that might be your best bet. Boss pedals are virtually indestructible so even if you get one that's cosmetically in bad shape it ought to still work fine.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll keep my eye out for a used TR-2. Happy New Year!

The old Jim Dunlop TS-1 Tremolo/Stereo Pan can usually be found cheap second hand, and is still as viable as ever. These were the only widely available tremolo units in pedal form for many years, so they were used on many classic tracks (such as all of Ed O'Brien's parts on Radiohead's The Bends, one of my favourite albums for tremolo and... erm... most other things). It can be choppy or throbbing according to taste, in lovely ping-ponging stereo. I had to sell mine, but will be buying again when circumstances permit.

I have an old 2 knob Voodoo Lab tremolo, If you see one cheap you may want to give it a try. It's very smooth and buttery after you turn the internal pot all the way down. It was to choppy for me until I did that. If you turn it all the way up you get helicopter tremolo.
