Can anyone reccomend an affordable drum machine?
I'm mainly looking for a realisticly acoustic sound, timbales would be a plus for sure. I play mainly roots reggae, with some ska, some surf, and some punk. I've been eyeing the Boss Dr. Rythm DR3, is this one good for the money? should I go with computer software instead?
Thanks!

-David

I would add the Alesis SR-18 to your list of machines to look at. The SR16 really stood the test of time, but Alesis now has a new model.

Software is almost always going to be more flexable, but you have to consider where your going to use it (do you want to drag a laptop everwhere).

I don't know how good its considered, but you can pick up Zoom MRT3s for pretty cheap. I have one, and its alright...

There's no sub for the sound and flexibility of the software drum machines. I've got EZ Drummer and it's amazing, the Roland stuff can't touch it.

But if you must have standalone, Roland is good, and that Zoom is the cheapest with some surprisingly good tones. Be prepared for a way tougher learning curve and lack of flexibility with the standalones over the software drummers.

If you try to program whole songs in the standalones, it's a lot of button-pushing and paging around and numbers compared to point-and-click, cut and paste and the ability to see all your tracks bar by bar on the screen. I'd never go back to hardware at this point, and I had the original E-MU Drumulator and tortured it into doing all kinds of stuff. But nowadays, why bother?

I'd really like to be able to make drum tracks on my laptop, and sync them to a module,
but the only ones that can do that are WAY out of my price range... (500+)
The Alesis SR18 looks great, I just can't find it anywhere-and it looks spendy... :)

Yeah, I hadn't checked the price. The SR-18 is $250 at sweetwater.
If it works like the old model (much cheaper) it's very easy to use.

Check out some of the virtual drum software. With some of the newer features and the ability to "see" what your programming, it might be easier to use.

Some that I've seen/heard and would recommend are BFD 2.0 (fxpansion), dfh 2 (eastwest), Drum Core 2.5 and probably the best that I've heard is Groove Agent 3 (steinberg).

Here is a software drum machine that runs under windows and is very easy to use. This is actually a pretty well known piece of software. It even lets you load your own samples but that part is a little tricky.

I think I would be leaning towards software, except for my laptop isn't
very portable. (it has to be plugged in, and started up first)
Also, I'd really like to make basslines, so I actually want a full rhythm machine.
