Gibson, finally after salving a long list of problems introduced this thing in Sept.2011. What a curiosity, Sounds like a guitar players worst nightmare. I'm curious whether its worth the $4,000 price tag. I know that I would never use all this crazy stuff. Have any of you ever played one. I'm interested in your opinions. All it needs now is a spigot for your favorite beverage and you would really have something.

If it came with a keg of beer, it'd make sense. You'd have to be crazy drunk to drop $4,000 on a guitar that isn't at least pretty looking.

I always dug what Johnny Winter was able to coax out of a Firebird, those mini hums just rock! This is not a guitar in my opinion, more like an effect pedal with strings? Effect Pedals should be on the floor, not in a guitar. The tuner seems a nice idea, but I think I'll stick with manual tuning thank you. Not for me!

I appreciate that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, and that the original Firebird (a la Johhny Winter) is completely magnificent, but the Firebird X is a monstrousity. No-one will ever know what it does electronically, or what it means for the future of electric guitars, because no-one is ever going to be idiotic enough to strap one on..

It looks like it was drawn by a man with a Labrador and dark glasses, drafted on an etch-a-sketch, formed in a jelly mould, and was then left too near a microwave..  :(

It is a cartoon guitar, but made real..

The designers at Gibson at the moment, are either full on nut jobs, or they're working several rationality levels higher than than the average person can handle.. Gibson 'Zoot' SG anybody?

I would love a guitar that could re-tune itself, especially with the variety on alternate/open tunings I use. Nobody wants to watch me retune my guitar between songs. Thus, I carry three guitars and retune between sets.

I know that at one time there was an aftermarket robot tuner that can be attached to a Strat, but Gibbo might have bought that company and stopped offering it (?).

However, that monstrosity is not the way to attract a customer. Make that axe look like a real Firebird (reverse or not), make the controls/knobs match (and look like they belong on the same guitar) and put the same features on it and they might actually sell a few of them.

When I think of the possible combinations of guitar related things I could buy with $4000 there is no way I would even consider spending that type of money unless it channeled Hendrix for me.

+1/2 I would'nt drop $4k on this fugly guitar even if it DID channel Hendrix!

This guitar looks like it was designed by a team of corporate lawyers!

I was hoping that I wasn't the oddball here, sounds like I was on the money. No One likes it. Although I do like the auto tune if it were very inconspicuous. 8)

I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one just to try it out, as for gigging it's going to take memory greater than mine to remember everything, yeah just a minute folks the guitarist is just looking up his guitar manual, anyone out there know the dadgad setting, anyone

If it's just the auto tuning we like, then we should buy Trevor Wilkinson Fret Kings..

It costs $4k and takes 38 minutes to show how it works. My reaction was as follows:

What is the poor schmuck who bought one of these going to do 3 years down the road when the warranty has expired and any of the dodgy and flimsy mechanical and electrical components start to fail? Will there be a big enough network of trained technicans to fix these locally or will the owners have to send the guitar to the factory every time something goes wrong? I put forth the same question on the Gibson Forum and almost became the subject of a lynching.

I hated the design of the non-reverse Firebird when it came out in '65 and replaced the beautiful reverse body Firebird and now Gibson has revived it in the body of the Firebird X. Gibson would be much better off if they concentrated with quality and exorbitant pricing rather than creating products that would only appeal to a very small niche of the guitar buying public and will no doubt encounter hardware breakdowns over their lifetime.

They did. The original prototype Strat sold for over $100,000 last year.

There was a review in the magazine I get (Guitarist). They said it was a good idea, but it sounded bad. Apparently the distortion and overdrive sounds were awful, but the acoustic simulator was very good. I think the technology will catch up with the ideas eventually, but at the moment, whats wrong with just using a good guitar, a few pedals, and a decent amp? Gibson tried to find a solution for a non-existing problem, which will never be a success.
