I was over at a family friend's house when I saw the case. I asked him what was in it and he said it was a Stratocaster. He said that he quit playing years ago, so it was up for sale if I was interested. He said he wanted $100, or something to trade. I asked him what he'd be after for a trade and he said "A large sum of legos for a childhood project I never did." And that's how I got my first guitar.

My first guitar was a 1920s Selmer apparently built in their factory in Charing Cross, London. It previously belonged to my grandmother who probably had it from new: she was a school teacher and used it in lessons with small children.

None of the above makes it at all valuable - it isn't. But I feel quite sentimental about it:

Mine was a Stella, Blond Tiger Stripe Flat top. New $35. in 1954. I bought it with money from my Paper Route. Not much of a guitar but it was cool to me at the time. With the help of the radio and a little from my Dad I learned to play Somewhat. Thud-Thump-Twang-Damn.

My first two guitars I bought from the same guy, a friend/drinking buddy from high school named Jon.

The first was a Fender F250 acoustic. I bought it for $150.00, which was ok (not great) for a one-owner 3-year-old guitar.

I still own that acoustic; I have played it a million times and written dozens of songs on it. It has a great, rich dreadnaught sound that never gets too boomy. It's in dang near mint condition, except for a small ding on the from soundboard.

A few gear snobs criticized it based on brand and pedigree; due to the fact that it's (1) a Fender ("they don't know how to make an acoustic guitar!" I disagree) and (2) made in Korea. However, they generally shut up after playing the guitar, because it feels and sounds great.

Jon sold it to me because he was broke after buying a Kramer Ferrington acoustic (remember those?)...he immediately regretted selling the Fender, because although the Kramer looked cool, had a piezo pickup and played more like an electric, it sounded crappy whether plugged in or acoustically.

I don't have any pics of that guitar in Photobucket, so I'll have to upload some later.

My second guitar (my first electric) was also bought because he was broke. He had bought a creme-colored G&L Rampage with a Kahler tremolo (judging from the Ferrington acoustic and this axe, you can tell he was in a "shredder" phase; to be honest, he never really left that phase, even to this day)...and he was broke, so I offered to buy his G&L F100 guitar for $175 (this time, I got a GREAT deal; he sold it waaaaay too cheap). At the time I was in college and had made the Dean's list, so my parents paid me back the money I gave Jon, stating that they were planning on buying me an electric anyway, but I beat them to the punch.

He also sold me a solid-state Gibson G-20 amp for $25 and a six-pack of beer (half of which I drank that night, so I guess it was technically a 3-pack of beer).

It's a 1980 G&L F100 with the Series II neck profile, passive coil- and phase-tapped humbuckers, hardtail bridge, tobacco sunburst finish and a rosewood fretboard. I have seen hundreds of G&L F100 guitars over the years, but never one like this. Most have tremolos, maple fretboard and single-colored finishes. Also, judging by the serial number, this was one of the first axes to come out of the G&L factory.
Jon also immediately regretted selling this one, because it was so dang unique and his brother said, "I would have paid you twice that!"  Too bad, so sad...

I still own that guitar as well, and it is in Excellent condition, especially for a 31 year old guitar.

I also still own the amp, and play through it semi-regularly; it has one of the coolest Vibrato circuits I've ever heard.

Years passed, I got married and our (personal) goals in life changed, and we didn't hang out or see each other for a few years. When I formed the Screamin' Armadillos, he was the second guy I called (drummer was first), and he filled the "other" guitarist spot (we both played rhythm and lead). He's one of the best guitarists at backing up a harp player I ever jammed with, but he had some other on-stage tendencies that were less than endearing, so he left the group a couple of years later at our request.

Sometimes I miss jamming with him.

Cool Stuff!!! That Gibson amp looks so cool! :)

Thank you!
Jon's father repossessed mobile homes (how's that for a redneck job?) and found that amp in a closet of a mobile home, so he gave it to his oldest guitar-playing son, who passed it to the next-oldest guitar-playing son, who ripped off the black tolex, shellac'd the wood and installed a twenty-foot power cord. He owed Jon some money, so he gave it to Jon, who sold it to me...this sad little orphan had been shuffled around for years before I adopted her. I added the stickers and branded it.

First one that I started to learn guitar on was the Kramer XL-III. Belonged to my ex-wife. She didn't play it much and had loaned it to her brother. She went through a spell where she was learning a bunch of different instruments, asked if I wanted to learn anything, and I said "guitar". So she got it back, I restrung it and started learning. After we split she gave it to me as a birthday gift since she didn't play much herself. I had it set up properly, had some fret leveling done, and I think it's my favorite.

My first guitar was a no name hand me down from my uncle that I got for my 10th birthday one month after seeing the Beatles for the first time Feb 9 1964.The strings on it were old Black Diamond strings that were the same gauge as suspension bridge cables-at least that's what they felt like, and the action was very high Being able to play that guitar with its high action etc. made my transition to electric guitar an absolute breeze so much so that when I got my first electric my playing really took off because I was no longer encumbered by an almost unplayable guitar.

Dude.. I have that same amp. I'm literally sitting 5-feet away from it right now. That's where I got the knobs for my new parts-Tele:

My first BIG amp is a big brother to these.. It's a 6x10 tube combo stack (1-12ax7, 2-6l6). It's the size of a damn refrigerator. Still have it too.
Here's the big beast in the middle of this old picture.

My first guitar, believe it or not, was a Fender 1982-'57 Strat Reissue. My brother stole it from his friend and gave it to me for Christmas. Months later when the guy found out, he said I could keep it if I learn how to play it really good.

My first guitar (well real guitar) was my classical--I got it for Christmas.
My grandparents were visiting, and we went to church Christmas Eve-while we kids waited in the car with our grandparents my parents put out the gifts--when we got home, I saw the guitar case and was ecstatic--I still have that guitar & still play it.

My parents were surprised I didn't expect it--I had no clue--but I loved it.

My first guitar was a 3/4 size Framus arched top jazz-style acoustic. I was 10 or 11 at the time. My mom paid a small fortune for it and my dad was a little upset about the price. I think it was $300 in 1969. The first guitar I bought with my own money was a Kent Strat copy. I think I was 13 but possibly 14. I started working in my dad's shop when I was 12, sweeping, cleaning restrooms, pumping gas, tire work, etc. It was then and still is the only Kent guitar I've ever seen.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

My first guitar was an encore acoustic some church members had given me when they found out I was interested, around 12 years old. Shortly after that, I worked all summer building swimming pools to pay off a Kramer Baretta that my dad had placed on layaway at a local pawn shop. That's when the fun began. I would plug it into our stereo's mic input util I got my peavey rage amp a year later. It's been just over 20 years since that first guitar. Wish I still had it.

I wish I had a cool story but about 4 years ago I decided at age 32 to finally start playing guitar so I got up and went to the biggest guitar store of I could think of in town and bought a Squier Tele and a Line 6 Spider amp. I never use either anyore but I could never get rid of them because they were my babies for almost a year.
