I just want to ask: Fuzz wouldn't be good idea?

Fuzz is a great idea, but it's not overdrive nor is it distortion.

See here for a tech-y discussion of fuzz vs overdrive vs distortion:

It seems (from his request) that he was looking for a good overdrive pedal, so that's probably why nobody suggested any fuzz-es.

here is my dilemma...

i play mostly classic rock-60's jazz- southern rock-blues type stuff. i am trying to narrow down what type of pedal to get. i don't play metal, and i need something that plays nice with my solid state amp  just looking for something to give me that nice breakup

should i be looking at as overdrive more than distortion pedal? i am looking to stay in the hundred buck or so range, and i play my mim strat and epi nighthawk into a carvin sx200 amp. i need something that's not noisy too.

any recommendations would be welcome. i would love to sample them all, but since most stores don't carry a lot of pedals, i'm relying on my phorum phrends to pull me through

t.i.a.

If you have a solid state amp (like I do  ) Some of the distortion pedals will make the solid state amp scream like a banshee and peel the paint off the walls. A subtle overdrive is a lot nicer and adds just the right amount of punch and works great with a solid state amp.

A really cool alternative that you could do (if your electronic knowledge and soldering skills are pretty good), is to get one of those pedal kits from BYOC - - Build Your Own Clone ( http://www.buildyourownclone.com ). I built their "Classic Overdrive" Ibanez TS-808 clone for $70 bucks and it is awesome! If later on I don't care for a certain tone or the overdrive range of it, I can take it apart and easily change out a resistor or a capacitor.

In my opinion
Overdrive - - - BTO's "Takin' Care of Business", "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet", etc...
Full Overdrive - - - Georgia Satellite's "Keep Your Hands To Yourself"
Distortion - - - Boston's "More Than A Feeling", "Don't Look Back", "Feelin' Satisfied", etc...
Distortion (w/ a touch of delay and flanger) - - - Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption".
Full Distortion - - - Ozzy's "Crazy Train".
