here is my dilemma...

i play mostly classic rock-60's jazz- southern rock-blues type stuff. i am trying to narrow down what type of pedal to get. i don't play metal, and i need something that plays nice with my solid state amp  just looking for something to give me that nice breakup

should i be looking at as overdrive more than distortion pedal? i am looking to stay in the hundred buck or so range, and i play my mim strat and epi nighthawk into a carvin sx200 amp. i need something that's not noisy too.

any recommendations would be welcome. i would love to sample them all, but since most stores don't carry a lot of pedals, i'm relying on my phorum phrends to pull me through

The Fender/Boss 59 Bassman Simulator pedal is what is I use with my solid state Hughes & Kettner amp. Here's a link with 4 sound samples on board:

http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetai ... ductId=854

The range was apparently designed for transistor amps, but needless to say it sounds superb into my valve amps too..

At a little bit more than $100 I think the English Muff'n would suite your range of genres.

The best overdrive/distortion that I've come across is the Marshall Guv'nor,it can give you clean boost or the roar of a 1959 Plexi at full tilt. You can still see them the odd time on ebay etc.The Marshall Bluesbreaker is also worth a look.Danelectro makes its Cool Cat Transparant Overdrive for a very reasonable price and it's a great pedal giving a full range of boost voicings.

I personally would advise against using a transparent overdrive such as an OCD with a solid state amp. An OCD is a great pedal, but I feel it's best meant for driving glass.

For a SS amp I'd go for something that colors your sound a bit more. I love my SD-1. Could be well worth a try, especially for the price.

I agree with any of the above. I think the Blues driver might be the best choice for a solid state amp. It has a nice overdrive tone and also can give you a good volume boost for solos.

Digitech Bad Money is GREAT with Solid State amps!

Use the dual outs to go to two separate channels.

The Danelectro Daddy-O is not a pure OD in the strictest sense because you can tell there's more going on there than simple OD but it is a very usefull sound and it works well with SS amps and it's reasonably inexpensive. I haven't looked at them for a while but I know at one time they made two versions of the pedal and they may still. If they do it's the larger heavier one you want. The Fab-Tone is also a useful sound but it's more of a one-trick-pony, not nearly as versatile as the Daddy-O. With both pedals less is usually more as regards the gain settings if playing at gig or rehearsal volume levels. Bedroom levels, do as you please.

Of course there is a much, MUCH, MUCH more important pedal to get first.

The best part of this pedal is how you can turn down the suck.

Yes, I am talking about the original big, heavy, creme-yellow shield-shaped Danelectro Daddy-O with three tone knobs. The thing weighs a ton, and be careful if you throw it at somebody...just ask my bass player's widow :o

I almost forgot one of my favorites (currently residing on the Big Ol' Board of Sonic Goodness): the MXR M-66 Classic Overdrive.

It was sold only at Guitar Center for a limited time a couple of years ago, thus it is hard to find, unless a GC has one hiding on the back of the shelf. They were originally offered for less than $40 (street price), but have gone for much more on EBay.

But it has some pretty cool sonic qualities. Also, there's a simple modification that allows two "modes" or "voices" to be used. After the mod, I have a combination MXR GT-OD (stock) or an MXR Zakk Wylde signature overdrive at the flick of a switch...
