Merry Christmas to all on the Forum!!

A quick question/observation to ponder over the holidays...Has anyone else ever noticed the callouses on your fretting hand fingers interfering with your ability to use a computer touch screen?

I seem to always have a bit of trouble when I try to use my calloused fingertips to manipulate the touch screen of my iPod or my friends' iPhones.

The problem is, of course, easily solved by just switching over to my other hand. But I was just curious if I'm the only person who's noticed this (or perhaps I'm just imagining things!).

Most touch screens including the iphone are based off of the transmitting heat the your body (fingers) give off. I cant imagine that it would cause problems. Then again, I have never really tried using it in my left hand.

Hey, this geezer could be on to something..
The gps and computer, in my Ute, are all touch screen and seeing as the ends of my are always burnt, calloused or covered wih plasters, I could never get it to register, I just took to stabbing at the screen with the end of my pen.

Actually the apple touch screens such as the iPhone work through electrical conduction through the skin, so if you have thick callouses of dead skin this could definitely interfere with that and give you problems.

Funny thing but i've noticed this as well but using the built in mouse on my laptop. If i go to use any of the calloused fingers in my fretting hand the mouse doesn't move the cursor as if the callous sets up a barrier. Strange thing. :?:

It happens when you play a lot man.
Typing 10,000 words a day on a guitar forum doesn't quite have the same effect
I just use the other hand.

Glad I'm not the only one who's experienced this -- makes me feel slightly less crazy! :)

I've noticed it's more of an issue immediately after a long playing session. Probably that's when the callouses are the thickest...

Yeah rest easy it's not just you :D If i'm working at the laptop and stretching for something with the hand i normally use for the mouse (right hand for me, picking hand) then if i go to move the mouse with one of my fretting hand fingers with tha thick callouses the mouse won't move the cursor and i have to use my regular hand again. Weird but i think it's that way for nearly everyone who has thick callouses from playing 8)

Did you know that typing, playing videogames, and most instruments can cause callouses? Videogame callouses are much worse, because they can cover most of the hand. Also, it doesn't happen because I don't use the callous, I use the part just under it with my finger laying flat.

It's a little hard to believe that tapping little plastic buttons will cause calloused fingertips to compare with a serious guitarist's fretting hand.
You have a nice Christmas Bux, I hope Santa brings you a tuner.

The buttons have textures, as do strings, and as does the wood of the neck. The texture, plus the pressure is what causes the callous. I've never met someone who had developed callouses from touching a smooth touchscreen before. Also, great insult. Up your vocabulary and show me some real hurt, big boy.

It's not my intention to hurt.
My vocabulary is just fine, thanks.
As an Australian, I am unable to swallow BS.

I meant it. Have a nice Christmas.
