The serial would date it to a 68 but it should have the serial impressed in the back of the headstock, no stamped.

Your right it was made in `68. I took the above advice and went into the Gibson Forums and posted the picture with my question. Someone went on the Guitar dater project and said it was made in `68 at the Kalamazoo plant.
Thanks again

I read the thread at MLP Forums and I don't think you got a definitive answer. They were asking about whether Made In USA was stamped under the serial number. Here's another site that might help: http://www.latesixtieslespauls.com/serial.asp
I think it's an early '70's myself.

Yes Made in USA is stamped under the serial number but I`ll check the link you have there.

There were no '68 cherry sunburst Deluxes. The '68s had P90s, weren't called/labeled "Deluxe" and were all Goldtops. The Deluxe with mini-humbuckers was introduced in '69 but cherry sunburst wasn't introduced until '71.

Gibson serial numbers are confusing because the ranges of numbers overlapped during different eras. You have to narrow down the era first, then find the corresponding serial number format. The features of your guitar tell us it can only be from '71~'75 (assuming it hasn't been refinished from a Goldtop to a sunburst). If you then look at the serial number format in use during '71~'75, you see that "8xxxxx" numbers started in '73 and ran through '85.

"Gibson Serial Numbers, early to mid 1970's.
All models, stamped in back top of headstock. "MADE IN U.S.A." stamped below the serial number in back top of peghead, in the same size type, and on two lines with "U.S.A." below the "MADE IN":
Number Year

6 digits + A 1970

Also in 68 it would be a one piece body, not pancake with veneer.
