jeez armadillo, you're like the "funk and wagnall" of harp info here...
for strictly harp i use the almighty JT30. if i'm singing along with it and want that 'crunchy" vocal sound i hold the JT30 right next to the 58beta and use both mics at the same time.
i run the JT through an MXR guitar compressor to rein in the feedback and then into my hot rod deluxe.
for "coffee house" type rooms i just use the beta... it does a really nice job reproducing whatever's going into it. imo, it's a much better mic than the standard 58.

Thank you, Frankie!
I've done the singing-and-playing-through-three-microphones things during recording and performing, and it's a killer way to blend clean, nasty, warm & funky harp and vocal sounds.
I gotta check out those Beta mics and MXR (Dyna Comp?) a bit more...thanks for boiling up some GAS for me!

yes, it's the dyna comp. i tried unsuccessfully for quite awhile hooking the JT30 directly into the hot rod. ear-piercing feedback wherever i tried to position the amp.
the compressor idea came as sort of an accident.
my 16 yr old son works for the local junk man, you know, cleaning peoples garages, attics, sheds, apartments where the folks have moved on but left all their crap there. he came home one night with a little gift for his dad... the MXR Dyna Comp. i already run my guitar through a noise gate, fuzz, OD, delay/echo, cry baby, TU2... and i didn't really want to add another pedal. then it dawned on me to see if the comp would help with the feedback issue... and, yah-freakin'-hoo! been working very nicely ever since. i used to have to run the bullet through my 20W fender automatic... which was allright... but no comparison to how it sounds through the hot rod.

i have you to thank for some very sound advise awhile back when i first got the bullet.

over and out for now.
ftk

The Hot Rod series generally won't work well for harp (as you said, feedback issues) without either some modifications (tube changes) or some external device to tame that squeal monster...however, if you can get that issue fixed, they have a great sound (as evidenced by Kim Wilson's use of them recently). I'm glad you found a "cure."

If you don't mind me asking, what are your settings on the Dyna Comp?
I'm using a Rocktron HUSH pedal for both noise suppression (guitars as well as harps) as well as feedback taming, but if something else works, I'll try it!

I've searched through my memory (a dangerous and murky placed filled with funky dives and the ghost of Jose Cuervo) and can't for the life of me remember suggesting a mic to you, but if I did and it helped, you're welcome.

it wasn't the mic you suggested, it was where to put the amp in relation to where i was standing. tried to find the post, but i gave up
i'd seen a few shows where whoever was playing harmonica was using a bullet mic. i'd been dying to get one ever since. i saw a local band "johnny hoye and the blue fish", got tired of dying, so i bought one. then, of course, there was the feedback issue.
i'll check the settings and let you know.

Let us know if it works...

Hi again SA gave that harp a clean and it certainly eased off the holes that were playing up, thing is I got a bit more inquisitive  so out came the screwdrivers and had a peek under the covers, went together again no problem but now seems to have partly lost it's ease to overblow ( wahwah ) so I think it's time I got down the shops seen some Hohner marine blues harps and start again.

rip, you may have either overtightened or undertightened the covers when you put them back on. take them off and put a little candle wax around the front edges to seal them against the reed plates... kind of like a valve cover gasket, you know 8) if the front edge isn't sealed properly you wind up pushing air under the covers so you can't bend the reeds as easily.

armadillo, output 5; sensitivity 1... but it's kind of hard to tell because the knobs are not calibrated. it's a rather old unit.

+1 Perfect explanation of your issue...I'm glad cleaning it helped, and I'm glad you didn't take apart an expensive harp; that can be costly, long-term.

Frankie-
I understand the "approximation" settings of old (and new) MXR pedals (half of my pedalboard is MXR stuff--new, old and vintage) so your description is perfect...now, I gotta go find a Dyna Comp to check out. Thank you so much for the suggestion!

I think I never thought about a compressor to reduce feedback because my only previous experience with compressor stompboxes was a BOSS CS-3 (I think?) Compressor/Sustainer a few years ago...that thing added noise, brittleness and harshness to the guitar, so you cen imagine it's effect on a harp mic!
