at that age i was playing a stella harmony 3/4 size acoustic ... tolearn on. reasonably priced and if the kid quits ...like my brother did ... no big loss money wise...

Seagull Guitars (division of Godin) makes some pretty nice entry level instruments. You usually get a fairly good bang for your buck. They can be found at Guitar Center, ZZSounds, Elderley, Amazon and others.
