here's the background:

my house is 80 years old. updated to modern wiring 20 years ago, although a few of the old outlests still exist
my equipment is:
stage 100 amp
carvin sx200 amp
09 mim hss strat
11 epi nighthawk
crybaby wah, sonic glory od, and zoom g3

my dilemma quite simply is hum. even when nothing is plugged in and the amps are on, there is a quiet but noticeable hum. when using overdrive or distortion, it gets too loud. even switching guitars changes little.

am i looking at a ground loop issue? would something like an ebtech hum-ex help?

any and all solutions are welcome

Are all your outlets grounded? also see what is all on the circuit you plug on and type of lights. I have a stage 100 and these are pretty hot amps. Have you ever played some where else and did the hum as bad?

for me it was a combination of ground and my halogen light with dimmer(even when turned off)
so i rolled a cable from the kitchen for ground, and unpugged the halogen : silent as a sleepin baby.
works in my gf's 80 year old house too.
wish u luck with it, its very annoying i know!

Also investigate an Electro-Harmonix Hum De-Bugger.

We have a big honkin sodium vapour streetlamp about 50 feet from the house and yes, even small fluorescent bulbs "give off" hum.

The Hum De-Bugger worked, here, even for those big Mosrite single coil pickups. Best of fortune.

It depends on how the hum is getting in there.

If it's just AC hash or radio frequency being picked up by a mass of wires (read: antennas), something like the EH box might do it. And it might not, too. Make sure you can return it if it doesn't mitigate the mess.

A ground loop, on the other hand, happens when two different interacting audio devices share the same ground by two different paths: for example, you've got your amp plugged into one outlet and your pedals into another. They're both getting to ground on the same circuit, but one has to travel a longer distance than the other. If this is NOT the situation, then it's not a ground loop. But if that IS the situation and the noise is a steady buzz at an unchanging frequency, then you can kill it by using a power strip to make sure everything is plugged into the same outlet, ot with an isolation transformer box like the ART CleanBox.
