If you don't believe me, go to the front page of Reddit. There's a news article.

http://www.breakingnews.com/

I guess this is sort of the Twitter of the press.

Well, didn't he have the highest alcohol budget in the world? I hope those companies don't go out of business.

Unfortunately, now his son takes power, and he is much, much more dangerous. There's also a pretty big threat of a military coup and/or civil war for power, as you can bet there are a few generals sitting on some serious ordinance thinking "Maybe it should be MY turn to rule....".

His death could be a very good thing or a terrible, terrible thing. :?

Hate to be pessimistic, but I'd have to agree with you.

I have been several times to North Korea and the situation there for the "regular" population is much worser than the worst you can imagine.

And to top it off, the people of North Korea are to brainwashed and starved to do anything about it. :(

Most of them don't even have much of an idea who Kim Jong-un IS. It's going to be a terrible mess.

Ahh yes, Floyd. But, if someone who isn't corrupt gets a seat of power, imagine what that could do for the country? The world as a whole?

Hate to be pessimistic, but I'd have to agree with you.

Of course, nobody knows. But I think a military coup is unlikely, for the simple reason that the military are already in control. When Kim Jong Il took over from his father his position was precarious, because he was such a crass psychotic idiot compared to the efficient brutality of his parent. So through the '90s and 2000s he bought his position by a constant transfer of power to the military: he turned himself into their willing puppet.

In turn, Kim Jong-un has also been groomed as a readymade replacement frontman. It appears to be him who will step into his father's shoes rather than either of his two elder brothers precisely because he is more to the military's liking.

So hopes that the dynastic succession might be the opportunity for change may be overly optimistic. If change is to happen it will probably have to come from within the military itself, a little like the slight thaw that seems to be taking place in Burma at present. But unlike Burma there seems currently less for the Korean generals to gain from relaxing their grip, so unless the outside world can find something with which to tempt them we probably shouldn't hold our breath for a turn for the better anytime soon.

It would be very nice to be wrong.

Meantime. The king is dead; long live the king. Unfortunately.

Cheers - C
