Maybe this was done as a joke, but the point I'm trying to establish is made clear in this video. FAKE PLAYING!

Nirvana makes it obvious, obviously here, but what I'm saying is that It can be very easy to fake a performance musically and I personally think musicians do it all the time.

Theirs no room for error when things are already correct, with said, to make something perfect they fake it.

As I said before, I'm not just picking on Nirvana by any means.

Yeah, no s***. It's no secret that Top Of The Pops was entirely fake, that's the point they were trying to make. The Smiths did it too.

A few people tried to get away with lip-synching and were caught. Milli Vanilli and Ashley Simpson come to mind. There are probably a few others, but those are singers...

I heard that Pete Townshend has a backup guitar player when The Who plays live behind the curtain because of the tinnitus in his ears. Somebody correct me in if I'm wrong on this.

And, well most rap acts use a completely pre-recorded musical track.

So yeah, you could make a case that there are a few fakes out there (depending on your definition) but definitely not ever single band out there.

(And I am by no means calling Pete Townshend a fake!!!)

nah, it made me laugh. Grammar mistakes are hilarious if you catch them in the right sentence.

I guess. I laughed at some of the Kim Jong Il jokes that have already surfaced.

Hi Highline: then respectfully I will.

For some years now Pete's younger brother Simon has been playing backing guitar in the band, but he's right there on stage, not hiding behind a curtain. Here's a photo from earlier this year: there's Simon right behind Roger Daltrey. And that's Rabbit Bundrick on keys behind Townshend: back in the day he used to be set up so far to the side of the stage that some of the audience probably couldn't see him, but that wasn't fakery as such; I think the idea was just that he wasn't part of the band's front line. And that went for various other backing musicians The Who carried at different times in their live career too - horn sections and such. We could see them, they just weren't at the front of the stage. I'm sure nobody in the audience felt they were being had on:

I can see how these sorts of notions get generated. In the late '80s for the tinnitus reason you mentioned Townshend took to playing acoustic on stage, sometimes with the strategically placed perspex baffles that are nowadays so popular for ear protection. At that time he was indeed being doubled by another guitarist - but again, in full view. No pretending.

Also, The Who were amongst the earliest users of backing tracks as part of their live sound, for the synth parts in numbers such as Won't Get Fooled Again and Baba O'Riley. But nobody was pretending that those parts were somehow coming out of Pete or John's instruments. It was clear to the audience what was going on; there was no fakery.

...I'm only typing all of this because I thought it might be nice to have a bit of reality on this fatuous thread. I notice MissStevie just got banned for the umpteenth time, but in my opinion he isn't the most tiresome of our current Forum trolls. Mentioning no names... Jake.

Cheers - C

When I first read this thread it was only a few posts old. I wanted to reply because it was really taking a nasty turn. having decided to wait and see the results, without posting something angry. I just couldn't see getting into an argument with most of the people here who do make sense.

There will always be those who say questionable things because of their lack of knowledge and / or experience. there will be those who will say stupid things because they are stupid. there are those who will quietly suffer through the trolls, there are those who will speak their mind.

What makes it all worthwhile is new players coming on and getting lots of good advice and encouragement.

As long as we can keep it in perspective, it will all work out.

I just opened this thread for the first time and it took a while to figure out that the OP must have deleted all of his posts. When that happens, the next poster becomes the OP. I couldn't understand what the title and your first post had in common.
