That definitely helps! Thanks!

I'll try one of his buddies... hopefully guys can keep secrets (unlike most women)! I'd hate for him to find out.

Point of reference: I ordered a new guitar while at work. I emailed a good friend about it. I walked in my house that evening and my wife said: So you bought a new guitar. It's nice that all our friends know before me!
Lesson: Guys leak.

What Bass player wouldn't love a brand new Bass like this?

I'm a short scale bass kind of guy but I sure wouldn't be too disappointed to find that under the tree!

ANd if your husband's band mates/friends have any class they'll keep your secret knowing how great the surprise would be!

As Solid Body Love Songs said, the Jazz Bass is one of the finest instruments available. In my humble opinion, the bass that would be the very best Christmas present would be an American Standard Jazz Bass.

Price would be around $1000.00 included is a great case.

Not much of an update. I did contact one of his bandmates and a guitar store in our area. Everyone is on the look out for a '72 Fender Jazz Bass. I have a few more months before his b-day. If I don't come across a decent one then it's have to be new - which I'm sure he'll still be happy about.

Hope 2012 is good to you! :)

Gary's Classic Guitars, based in Loveland, Ohio, has a sunburst 1972 Jazz with original case. This '72 Jazz appears to be in excellent condition. The asking price is $4995. Any vintage dealer will be slightly negotiable. A good opening offer would be $4,400 on that one. Gary's phone is 513-891-0555.

I know of several others around the vintage market, but that is the nicest looking one I know about.

There is one that is a decent player in Miami with an asking price of $3850. Also sunburst, but it has lots more wear on it. Music Magic is the dealer that has it and their contact phones are 305-975-6656 and 305-667-8103. Again, the price will be negotiable.

There are others around but those are the best two 1972 Jazz Basses I can find at the moment.

Before buying a vintage instrument, I urge you to get a second opinion from someone who knows something about vintage Fender Jazz Basses and then get a formal appraisal from an independent authority as soon as possible after purchase. There are forgeries out there as about any collector knows. You will need to get a rider on your home owner's policy to insure the instrument and a written appraisal could be invaluable in the event of a claim.

Often you can buy a used Fender Custom Shop Jazz, which is an exceptionally nice instrument, for far less than a real 1972 Jazz. That would be another option for you. Fender Custom Shop basses are first rate instruments.

Thanks for the update bestwifeever, wishing you and yours a safe, healthy, prosperous and happy 2012. I'm thinking he'll be happy about a new one too, lol. Keep us posted. :D
