Someone thinks that's the "best" lick Duane Allman played. I'm not going to argue - but it got me thinking about all the great, great moments that gentleman recorded.

Lotta love for Duane on this Forum: anyone feel like nominating their favorite licks, passages - whole damn solos if you like?

I could pick so many. Just for shucks, howsabout the bit on One Way Out (Eat a Peach version) when Dickie has played his nice solo, then they trade lines for a moment - and then Duane lets go and just burns it down in about 16 bars flat? From around 3.15 here:

I like both of those Ceri and I agree wholeheartedly that Duane's guitar playing was great. I am going to look for one of his recognizable licks now too.

At 7.44 I hear a very obvious Dave Gilmour lick - about four years before Dave played it. If you get what I'm saying...

Oh, I know what you're sayin'. Duane stole a bunch of my licks years before I played them too!

Here ya go Ceri,my favorite lick, slides up at 2:35 hit's two repeating notes at 2:36. :D
you can say the phrase actually starts at 2:33,then the other notes end the phrase.
Don't know why,but after listening to Skydog since '69,that's my favorite.

My favorite is his slide work on the first ABB song I ever heard, "One Way Out". Listening to it on AM radio back in the day, I had no idea what was making that sound. At first I thought it was a woman's voice. Couldn't believe you could make a guitar sound like that.

Yes yes yes! Oh man, that's better than... well, you know.

In fact the first note the guitars play when they come back in over the bass at the beginning of that section sounds to me like shooting through the clouds and out into sunlight. And it just builds and builds upwards from there. I don't know if he was on something to play like that - but I don't think he needed to be. I think that playing is as close to touching the inside of someone else's soul as it gets.

Thanks so much for taking the time to put that up. And by the way, when musical taste gets as precise as the exact playing of one or two notes then those are some good ears at work you've got there. Serious respect.

Can't argue with that! :D

And slightly in the same vein, one my all time faves is the studio cut of Dreams on the first album. The notes are so easy even I can play them (!), but the feel is just heavenly. Especially from about 3.58...:
