Note for note at first, then, when I'm comfortable with that I start to do things my way.
Except: for the middle solo in Heartbreaker, I have no clue how to approach that note for note.

Keep in mind that most original artist don't even do the solo they played on some given day in the studio. Some players like Jimmy Vaughn go out of their way to play a song different every time.

It is why we call them artist instead of hacks...

If I am covering a tune, I usually try to come close to the "signature" opening or some other hook and take it where I want from there.

Hi Hoeycow: I think it's a very good question, and I think there doesn't have to be just one answer.

Replicating note for note is an excellent discipline when we are learning. It means you can't avoid bits you find difficult so you have to master passagework you might otherwise skip past. And it is good training for the ears too: sometimes it is hard to pick out what someone is doing, and listening again and again teaches you to pay close attention to sounds you otherwise sometimes only hear as a blur of notes.

On the other hand, if we are going to perform music to others then it seems nice to bring something of ourselves to it, rather than just deliver a facsimile of someone else's playing. In that case there are no rules: we can just alter a bit of phrasing or we can change the whole feel of a number. Some of my favorite tracks are where someone has taken a slow song and done it fast (or vice versa), or a highly orchestrated number and pared it down to the bare bones (or vice versa), or a happy song and made it sad (or...).

Still. If we're going to add our own ideas to a number - we'd better have some good ideas. That's the tricky bit.

Cheers - C

There is nothing that annoys me more than a band thats billed as a cover band, throwing there own twist on to every song they play. when I play someone else's music I think I / We owe the original artists the respect of doing it the way it was intended to be done. When I play my own stuff that's Something else. If you want to be original Do your own songs. 8)

I think it depends on the situation, learning a piece note for note is a great way of refining your technical skills. Once you've learned the basics of a tune though I think it's too every musicians benefit to play it like you own it...in other words put your own voice into the mix. Having had to both over the years I can honestly say that doing a note perfect copy can be enjoyable but adding to it or changing it to make it come alive is way more scary, enjoyable and interesting

I probably couldn't play my own solos the same way twice--why would I do that on a cover?

I'd prefer to do my own--I may try to keep a similar flavour though.
