Here's a great video of Duke Robillard playing tribute to 10 of his favorite blues guitarist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl0l0mBmGDk

Duke's playing a stock 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue. It's an amazing display of all the great tones this amp can produce.

He's changing picking techniques, pick-ups and switching on and off a level booster (to push the tubes) / distortion pedal to get the different sounds.

Duke's teaching weekly lessons (including Blues A Rama) and giving personal feedback at http://sonic-junction.com

Enjoy Duke.

Sweet. I dig the Albert King interlude.

How's Sonic Junction? Is it worth the $1 a week price of admission?

First off .. before answering .. want to let everyone know I'm working with Duke and Corey on Sonic Junction.

Right now we're in Beta .. and charging $1 for a 30 day membership as we want to work with people who are willing to pay if the service delivers for them.

In terms of what you get for the $1 .. it's 30 day access to all of Duke's Blues A Rama lessons, Swinging the Blues lesson, Duke's new weekly lesson every Friday .. and personal feedback from Duke on your playing.

For me personally, my playing has grown immensely in the last 30 days during our Alpha ... I think this "social learning" with the interaction with Duke (and Corey) is very powerful.

So getting to your question ... probably the best way for me to answer is with questions ...

1. do you like blues, jazzy blues and/or Duke's playing?

2. do you have time right now?

3. do you like learning with people ... and the ability to ask questions etc.?

If the answer is yes to all three ... I would say it's a bargain. Hope that helps.

I've had the same experience with Duke. Great guy, amazing musician. The depth and breadth is surprising.

Mike, I do like me some blues. Mostly downhome type stuff as opposed to the more jazz variety, but for $1 for a trial membership, I might be willing to give it a shot. Only thing that scares me on stuff like this is places that put you on an automatic membership renewal type thing. As a customer, I definitely want to personally make the choice of whether or not I want to renew.

I'm not sure how the Sonic Junction deal is set-up but I just got a bill for $89 from McAfee to automatically renew my antivirus protection, which of course is a good thing to have, but it's not a good thing to be surprised that hey, they just took $90 out of my account I wasn't planning on. This just happened today so that kind of thing is on my mind. But like I say, a buck is no problem!

Hi Highline .. totally understand.

The $1 trial membership is a one time payment, you are not signing up for a subscription. If you do want to join later, that will be a separate process.

Also .. we will likely use PayPal Subscriptions in the future. The nice thing about that is you as a customer have total control to cancel at any time via PayPal.

Finally .. if you like Down Home Blues you should check out Corey Harris's acoustic stuff

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUXCjgHMcZU

.. amazing groove and vibe. He's playing it acoustic .. but works great on electric too .. that's what I'm doing.

Yeah .. and the cool thing about Corey is he spends a lot of time on the groove and emotion of the song .. i.e. how do you make music that moves people.

Thanks for posting the links Mike, I'm going to check it all out, it looks like it could be a fantastic learning opportunity and a source of inspiration.

Duke is one of my all-time favourite players along with Ronnie Earl. Tone, Touch,Taste, Feel, all the things that make a great player is just there in spades. It's great that he's taken the time to share these lessons. As I said I'm going to check it out.

Corey's version of Catfish Blues was great to listen to, great dynamics and feel, just watching his right hand move around to create the different tones is an education in itself. A lot of players don't realise how shallow their skills are until a situation like that where it's really just: "here's just one chord, get a groove going on just that one chord and see what you can do with it for the next 5 minutes".

Great stuff indeed.

I'm a big fan of Duke too! I first met him at Gilly's http://www.gillysjazz.com/ on his first solo tour back in the early '80s.

There were only about five people in the club that weekday night. I remember Gilly's owner Jerry Gillotti telling me that have to see Duke Robillard play, and so I did.

Duke came out wearing this Hawaiian shirt, I was thinking wtf, and as soon as he started playing, I blown away. Later after the first set, he sat with me, and I asked him about a T-Bone Walker lick he played, he took me to the bandstand and showed me the lick. I never forgot his kindness.

I also took my last $5 and brought his album, which I still have

Sounds good. Yeah .. I personally learned a lot from Duke and find myself playing what I learned from him a lot (especially some of those Muddy / Jimmy Rodgers licks).

With respect to Corey .. he's been fun getting to know and is opening up a new dimension for me. For Catfish blues .. he talks about letting the song 'breath' .. and starts taking a deep breath every time the song should 'breath' ...
