To paraphrase Ricky Ricardo, “I got some ‘splainin’ to do” as soon as Lady Armadillo gets back from visiting her family down in Tejas.

I went to Guitar Center last Saturday to check out a pedal (totally unrelated, and I didn’t purchase it) and saw this beauty, listed at $99.99

Epiphone Limited Edition Special P-90 in Worn Yellow finish:

My name is Screamin’ Armadillo, and I’m a P-90-aholic.

Image

The P-90s were the first thing that caught my attention, the worn yellow finish was the second thing (it looks a bit like TV Yellow but with no gloss).

As soon as I picked it up, I thought, “This thing is lighter than my sister-in-law’s temporal lobe!” …which is a nice thing, because my Tele and my G&L F-100 are both a bit heavy…when the repaired rotator cuff and repaired ruptured discs in the neck are acting up, my Strat and this one will be the go-to axes. I don’t know what kind of wood it is, and I can’t find any info about this guitar at all on the web, so I’ll just say it’s made from timber of a “Very Light-weight” tree (Genus: Not-us Heavy-us). :P

The wrap-around bridge is something new to me, but I adapted quickly and haven’t had any problems thus far.

Image

I love this color…it’s just vintage-vibey and cool, and I could customize it any way I want to.

At the store, I checked it out with a Fender ’59 Bassman LTD re-issue, a ’65 re-issue Deluxe Reverb and a Blues Jr. III…and it sounded amazing. Really great, fat tone on the neck pickup, and twangy-yet-rich (if that’s possible) tone on the bridge pickup. For some reason, the bridge pickup has a sound similar to a bridge & middle pup combination on a Strat, a la Robert Cray…
Both pups together sound really nice, but I’m lovin’ the neck pup with a bit of overdrive the most.

Nicely finished frets and fret-ends, which is always a dicey proposition at this price point.

Click on the pictures below for video/audio demos.

[b]The display model was a bit dinged up and needed a set up horribly, so I actually bought one that was in the box (tried it out before buying, of course). Besides the Armadillo ‘Tween’s Squier Mini Strat, I had never bought a new guitar out of the box—the two new guitars I have bought previously in my lifetime were both on the wall/display models…so thus far, I’m the only person to play her since the factory.

CONS:
It’s made in China. I don’t have a problem with foreign-made products, but I try to avoid Chinese-made products due to the human rights abuses. Oh, well, I guess I’m a hypocrite.

The tuners are going to have to be replaced. Why does any guitar manufacturer even use those pieces of crap? They never work right and it discourages many a budding guitarist who doesn’t know any better…

It needs a little bit of a setup to adjust to my liking (the setup isn’t bad, but I like the action low all the way up the neck). The neck is a tiny bit smaller (back-to-front thickness) than I prefer, but that wasn’t a deal-breaker, especially after I heard it. It feels pretty dang good, just a bit thinner than I like.

Besides replacing the tuners and getting a set-up, I’m going to have this baby pinstriped very soon…the hotrod aesthetic just begs for something funky and cool like that…

That is a good sounding guitar for that price range. Post pics when you are done adjusting it. Nice playing.

Hey man,you can't beat that price and the P-90s sound great, especially the slide tone.
Lady Armadillo should be pleased...you could have spent $1,000.

Cool.. A slab of mahogany and 2 P90s - doesn't get more rock n roll than that..

I have a real soft spot for taking a budget guitar and then improving it to be the very best it can. You really do have much more than your 99$ worth there!

Your photo's and demos were really well organised - good job.

As for Mrs Armadillo, well you found the guitar in a dumpster just up the street didn't you?

Can you call her and explain that to her?

Actually, I don't think she'll be too hard on me. It was an impulse buy but it came out of my personal "stash" money and she recently went on a clothing spree, so...

I'll just tell her it cost $2000 and then as she's freaking out hand her the receipt.

Are you kidding? You don't ever lie to a Mexican woman. Ever. She will know. She will cut you.

As you can tell from the videos, I can't play well enough for intonation to matter that much. :?

I like your Junior as well...my drummer has a black Epiphone Junior with a single P-90 that we've used for a dozen recordings, and it sounds great.

Only response I could think of, but go do manly things, like eat beef jerky, build log cabins, and catch criminals with your bare hands.

That is indeed a very nice addition to that axe family. I was never into any Gibsons or Epis, but the one that really caught my attention was a Melody Maker, due to its simplicity. I don't like really flashy things, and that has to be the least flashy Gibson out there. Might consider it eventually.

Back on subject, does anybody have any idea what Epiphone uses for wood on these cheapies?

It's really light-weight (this guitar weighs as little as a couple of my acoustics!), and has some nice grain under the finish, and has some really cool sounds.
