Malcolm Young (very good rythm guitarist, I like him), Jack White, Syd Barrett, Jerry Garcia, and also for me it's Pete Townshend. Many people don't know how good guitar player, songwriter and showman he is. When I saw record "Live at the Isle of Wight (1970)" it was something awesome and I started to listen more to The Who.

Oh, I forget one guitarist. Henry Vestine from Canned Head. Maybe he is not big rock star, but I like his guitar playing.

Brad Whitford always tops my list of underrated guitar players for a simple reason. There are many players deserving of greater public recognition, such as the amazing Ronnie Earl, who is highly regarded by his peers and in the blues community but not known or recognized outside of the blues world. Whitford, however, is known by most musicians and by most rock fans, but always as the second guitarist or rhythm guitarist in Aerosmith. He is, in fact, a humble monster of a guitar player, and he can do it all - vicious, soulful leads, songwriting, heavy funky rhythms. Search youtube for clips of him jamming as a guest with the Warren Haynes solo band or with Gov't Mule and see what he can play like outside of Aerosmith.

I would put Peter Green as HUGELY underrated Guitarist up in the same spot as Mick Taylor (Rolling Stones' guitarist from 1968 to about 1974). He is my personal hero and has been for decades, seemingly. He was the reason why the Stones were SO good during that period. If you have any doubts check out the recently released "Ladies and Gentleman..." DVD from the Stones. He wasn't much for stage charisma...he seems happy to just sit in the back and let Mick and Keith be the showmen. What kills me is you'll see him standing still with almost no expression on his face, completely pouring out his soul in his playing and giving the other greats of the time (Clapton and Page most notably) a real run for their money.

So...uh...cast my vote for Mick Taylor!

This video should cast aside any doubts as to the man's abilities....stick around to the end!

Here's a great video of Snooks Eaglin playing with George Porter of the Meters on bass.

The man had soul.

I'm lovin' the choices so far...here are a few more that should get a little more recognition

1.Amos Garrett...who loves fishin' as much as pickin...but has managed to record with a plethora of greats from Paul Butterfield to Maria Muldaur, Doug Sahm and Jerry Garcia.

2.Jerry Reed who recorded a couple of LP.s with MR Atkins as well as quite a few hot guitar tracks before getting into the comedy bag.

3.John Cippolina the snakemaster from the original Quicksilver Messenger Service.

4.Bruce Langhorne..the insiration for Mr. Tambourine Man...played on numerous Dylan LPs as well as nearly every other east coast folk artist in the sixties.

5. Cornelius Grant...the Temptations guitarist for many years also recorded on Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On and was a long standing member of the Funk Brothers

Jerry Garcia - Greatful Dead...

I miss Jerry. Dead shows were the best. Someone already mentioned Trey Anastasio. He's the first one I thought of when I saw the post.

Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins. Got to hang out with him for a bit one day. Kind of an odd dude, but much better musician than people gave him credit for.

But my favorite guitarist of all time and also someone who i think gets nowhere near the recognition he should is Johnny Winter.

Jimmie Vaughan

Bernard Allison (Luther's son)

Ron Wood--yes, I know he's in the biggest band in the world, but he doesn't get the props he deserves.

Mick Taylor--even better than Ron Wood!

UP Wilson--his recordings were "meh", he's unknown outside of Fort Worth or France, he had a drug problem and he's dead, but live...that man could smoke just about anybody.

Mike Campbell - Tom Petty
He's got chops but he knows when to use them - Mike's lead playing absolutely nails it every time; understated, classy, effortlessly cool, heart-heartbreaking.... and his tone is to die for. My No. 1 for most underrated guitar player.

+1

Campbell is incredible and when he and Tom were having difficulties years back I was very relieved when they patched things up and stayed together. Mike has come up with some absolutely amazing riffs through the years.

My # 2 choice - Malcolm Young - he starts most of those great AC/DC songs~!
