My new pain specialist has prescribed some new meds- one to only ease pain and one to both ease pain and help me sleep. It seems that at least one is having the opposite effect as they are both capable of some degree of sedation.I haven't slept since I got up out of bed 2:30 yesterday morning and slept very little the night before that.Maybe these meds will sort themselves out once they've been in my system for a while-I certainly hope so as this is literally a pain.

Guitslinger....its 1:41 in the morning here.I know all too well about pain and insomnia.Unfortunately they go hand in hand quite often.I am stuck awake myself right now and thinking about playing guitar ,but all the family is fast asleep and I am trying to be considerate. It is way to cold to set up in the garage or I would be out there jammin right now.Hope you get the meds sorted out and working for you.It took along time for me to get everything dialed in but I still have bouts of insomnia.Hope you can get some sleep and take care of yourself bro.Sometimes life is rough but I always try to make the best of the situation.Have you tried melatonin?...works for me pretty good and beats taking some of the gnarlier sleep aids like ambien cr or lunesta and that heavy duty stuff.I really hate taking those.I only take them if totally necessary but the melatonin has little to no residual side effects as it is a supplement

insomnia blows-i usually get 2-4 hours sleep on a average night, the occasional one i get only 1 hour sleep. when i do sleep, most of the time i have horrible nightmares. i wouldn't excatly say i have insomnia, but i hear where your coming from. believe me, i am bloody tierd all the time. right now i feel as if i could fall asleep any minute on the keyboard. as soon as i lay my head on the pillow i cant help but think about that horrible memory and if, when, its going to happen again, which leads me to having more panic attacks at night, which when im having panic attacks i think im having another stroke, which leads me to get more anxious, and so on and so on. i've tried medetating, i've tried relaxation methods, i've tried everything that's natural. none of it works.

hope you get your meds sorted out, or atleast they'll start working properly

I take a Melatonin tablet every night. Puts me out. Usually WHEN I do wake up its around 5-6:00 AM. Not too hateful. I had a fractured knee several yrs ago and the Doctor did the same with the meds. One wanted to kill the pain while another was a steroid that kept me awake and made me grouchy as hell. I finally quit the steroid med and got some sleep. As another said, try the Melatonin, its natural and works for me.

Seriously consider Medical Marijuana, any indica strain will put you right to sleep, here is a medical sight specifying in strains you may wanna check out for different effects and for certain uses: http://www.leafly.com/explore#/Sleepy/Insomnia , its just a medicinal herb, like that insomnia tea, but it doesnt ruin your liver like pills

I have terrible insomnia. On an average night to morning schedule, I'll go to sleep around 1:00-3:00 am and wake up at 5:30

If my state would allow it, I would use it for sleep.

I know EXACTLY how you feel Guitslinger. About every 2 month, I have to get two shots in my lower back. Although they help a lot, I know that I will not sleep for 4 nights. By the time they wear off, I am walking into walls I am so tired. Then, thankfully, I sleep for about 12 hours and I am fine. Good luck with getting some rest!

I've had sleep problems all my life, and now with the arthritis pain and meds I take it's crazy....when I'm off from work I just sleep when I can and stay awake,(mostly at night),but weekdays are bad,I'm counting the days till retirement, and then I will sleep as much or as little as I can.
believe me brothers...I understand!

@ Negative Creep : I am using medical marijuana in the form of pills,Cesamet and I take 50mg. at bedtime.I still haven't had what you'd call a good night's sleep since Thursday night.I'm very tired and fatigued-physically drained-but I still can't sleep. The doctor told me that I may have to try a dozen meds or combinations before I find one that works for me.Long term pain is a maddening and frustrating thing because it's so hard to treat and what works great for one person may have an opposite effect on another.

Has anyone considered haveing a sleep study done? That was the answer for me. They prescribed a C-pap Machine and Although it sounds terrible to wear a mask every night, it helps regulate your breathing So your sleep is not interrupted. I realise it wont work for pain related disorders and irregular work schedules, But many sleep disorders are directly related to your breathing. For some of you guys I swear it will make a new man/woman out of you.

Different people have different sensitivities to medication.

I cannot take anything that is morphine-based; while other people will take such a med and it will ease their pain and make them drowsy, it does the opposite for me...the pain doesn't lessen and I am wired to the max. Before a major (neck) surgery once, they gave me hydrocodone and after taking it (as directed) for three days, I had not had an hour's sleep, I was bouncing off the walls and I had broken out in spots--literally! We finally figured my body chemistry wasn't working with it (and a bit allergic as well)...

A lot of people will say a muscle relaxer helps them to sleep. It helps me too--I won't wake up! I was given a muscle relaxer, and when I took a whole pill I would be stoned out of my gourd for two days; even if I was awake, I was about as intelligent as the now-banned "Doofus Down Under"...I did not like it one bit. The most I could take was 1/4 of a pill, and that dragged me out for half a day.

The only pain med that works for me has been removed from the market due to related heart problems. I just hope I have no reason to take any more pain meds ever again.

I hope you find some kind of relief, no sleep will make you go insane.
