However the one seasonal song that I think is a true masterpiece and should be on everyone's Ipod playlist is "Merry Christmas Darling" by the Carpenters. No wall of sound. No driving beat. Simple and emotional this track simultaneously captures the hopeful loneliness so many people feel this time of year while reflecting the fact that Christmas is the time to be with the ones you love, even if just in your heart. I was in a store shopping after work on the way home and it came on. It stopped me in my tracks and I just listened to it. Most people today may not realize that it was intended for the soldiers in Vietnam, but I remember. What a gift to us her voice was, and we so seldom get to hear it anymore.
