It depends on what I'm playing. But I never use too much distortion, as far as I'll go is a nice dirty growl, that's about it. The only exception was in my early years when I was messing around with Hendrix tunes.

Now if I play something by somebody that uses a lot of distortion, I don't use as much as they do. I always play it using my own tone preferences. It's a good way to come up with new ideas.

For the type of music that I play, I prefer clean.

I like both for diferent songs. But I dont use full distortion I have a Super Overdrive. I just like to dirty it up and give it some boost when I use it.

A minimal amount of OD with a strat sends me to the moon and back!

I mostly play clean stuff. I do enjoy overdrive, fuzz and distortion also.

couldn't' live without either, but I prefer fuzz over distortion
a nice fuzz and nice overdrive pedal is all i need for tonal satisfaction

What I don't like is a bad distortion stompbox cranked to a point where no original tone is preserved

Clean with the drive knob turned about a 1/4 of the way up. As long as it's loud enough to seriously echo around the house. We have a Brady Bunch house straight out of the 70s with the big open living room that opens up to a loft. Great acoustics for guitar or the stereo cranked up.

Hello Deathto all,

15% = Clean
70% = a little edgy
14% = nicely distorted
1% = over the top

Cheers.

I like clean: I grew up with distortion (50 watt Marshall JCM 800s), but I found it frustrating that I couldn't get a decent clean tone out of them. I use mainly Blackface/Silverface Bassman heads now, and it gets pretty distorted with the volume past 4 or 5, and more saturated afterwards. If I need more distortion than that then I add a distortion pedal.

A friend of mine once had a joke about the 'clean tone from Hell'-Tele + Electro Harmonix Screaming Tree pedal (a treble booster-a retro review in Guitar Player said that it should have been called the 'Screaming Audience') + Hiwatt stack.

No song I have ever written hasn't had distortion, unless it was acoustic of course. But about half of my songs do have clean parts. But I would say I definitely prefer distortion.

I don't use alot of distortion, but I use just enough to get that twangy sound because that's in alot of the music I play. But I use clean when needed.

Clean for Jazz, a little crunchy for Blues.
