SO i have a Charvel 375 deluxe from either 89/90/91, not sure, which my grandfather brought me while i was over in Sweden a few years ago...

I played it loads when i got it and the frets were in pretty bad shape...

now i have been playing my gibson sg and fender strat and the sound coming out of the charvel just cant compare...

its a nice orange flame finish and is not in mint condition but i like it....

the current pickups (2 j-100 single coils and a j-90c humbucker) just dont cut it even running through my jcm2000 half stack.

So, is it worth stripping the electronics having the frets dressed/replaced and dropping in some dimarzio pickups to have a sweet 80s style guitar which my grandfather brought for me or should i try to sell it?

i would like to keep it but i just dont know how much i would need to spend in order to get it playing, and sounding, like i would want it too...

any feedback would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Larsson

all really up to you what its worth :D if you are looking to boost the value to sell it I wouldnt invest the money. but if you want to just play it and enjoy it for the sentimental value I say go for it

What ever value it may or may mot have is, or should be outweighed by its sentimental value. Its prity cool to hang on to something your grandpa gave you years ago. and the feeling will only get stronger as time gose by. Thats not just another guitar. 8)

Since it was a gift from your grandfather you should keep it and invest a bit of time and money into it,with a bit of work and as you say new Dimarzio pickups-ever thought of Bareknuckles?-you could possibly have a new favourite guitar.

Ditto. Unless you are hurting for cash I wouldn't sell anything especially something given to you by your grandfather. The only thing more fun than bringing a sickly axe back to life is the satisfaction of playing and hearing it when your done.

Fix it. Not only will you have an excellent axe, you'll have a usable tribute to gramps.

If you can't fix it all at once, do the frets, then pickups, etc.

You'll be glad you did.

I have a Model 3. When I started acquiring other guitars and comparing, I realised how underpowered the pickups actually were.

Replaced the 'bucker with a Seymour Duncan JB, and the single coils with DiMarzio SDS and another - actually a stacked humbucker. Put the guitar back on top in the overall grunt stakes. Those older Charvels are now officially vintage, so make sure you keep the original pickups for future restoration/sale.

Trouble is, never used it since! I'm a low to medium gain kind of guy these days and those p/ups are at their best when the guitar is wound up to screaming..
