Retroverbial makes a good point, if the Mrs has a hobby of her own then the dispute is minimized since you both have a "thing" you really enjoy.

My wife doesn't, but I'm sure it would be helpful 8)

My wife is fine with my guitars, I play with the axes and she does her own art thing.
She is more upset with my occasionally wanting to update camera equipment even though that is a business expense.

We haven't had a live tv feed in a long time, canceled that mind numbing thing ages ago.

Not sure what you mean. My wife is bringing me to the local music store after work and buying me a Takamine electric/acoustic. She just called me out of the blue yesterday and said "I know you've been wanting one for a while now so I called the music store to find out what they have. You pick one out tomorrow. Merry Christmas!"

I play every night....many times after everyone is going to bed or when I just don't want to watch tv. Do I get "the look" occasionally? Yes, but she knows that it's my thing. I support her with her hobbies, she supports me......of course, I do get the occasional "You have ten guitars. If you want a new one, you need to give one up. We have no more wall space." I understand this, so I do sell the occasional guitar for an upgrade.

Make sure she believes she is more important to you than your guitars.
In fact, make sure she believe she in more important to you than anything.

All long as she beleives it.
And it is almost totally up to you.
Almost totally because sometimes you can never win.

Isn't there a prayer something like, give me the stength to change the things I can, the patience to accept what I cannot change and the wisdom to know the difference.
Do what you can, then say some prayers.

luckily I can get my wife to play blues harp and jam with me sometimes  she has even started buying harmonicas so she understands the guitar thing better. but now I set the limits on how many of those she can have

My wife doesn't hate my guitars,as a matter of fact she loves some of them like my marine blue burst '82 Yamaha FG 346 that has turned into a stunning shade of teal green and my Gretsch Tennessean and John Lennon 1965 Epi Casino and EJ-160-E.She has drawn the line at 30 guitars but realizes that I have a full blown obsession with guitars and there will no doubt be more but I have to either save up the money or earn it gigging, doing guitar repairs or giving lessons.

I can't understand a wife hating something that brings their husbands joy and keeps them home-unless they are gigging-but that's another story.Maybe there's a touch of jealousy or the feeling that they are competing with your guitars for your attention.

I keep seeing mentioned how many shoes the wife's own. What ever happened to: Keep them barefoot and pregnant? We've lost our way!
We really need a tongue in cheek smiley.

I'm a hobbyist guitar player. I own three Strats, and in my down time, I like to learn some songs, and that's pretty much it. I just enjoy practicing and learning. Unfortunately, i only have time to pick one of my guitars up about three times a week.

Well, my wife seems to hate my guitars with a passion, and I don't understand why. I usually play them at night, when she's watching some TV show I don't want to watch. I don't see what the big deal is.

When I was a kid, I dreamed of one day becoming a famous guitar player. Those days are long gone. I even stopped playing guitar altogether, when I first met my wife. A few years after we were married, and I had some money saved up, and I got the itch again. So I purchased a guitar, eventually two, and now I own three. I have a decent career and I bought them because I could afford them, but more importantly because it's like having a little bit of my youth back.

Well the complaints have been, "why do you need three?", or "we are short on cash right now, why don't you sell one of your guitars?" She doesn't seem to understand how important my guitars are to me. I liked playing guitar long before I met her. To me, it's part of who I am, as I'm sure it is to all of you.

From what I've read on some of these forums, it seems to be a common dilema for husband guitar players. So my question is , Why do our wives hate our guitars? and secondly is there a solution to this problem?

You have to agree to disagree. My wife hasn't been into my guitars....ever. Here are some gems from our interactions over the years.

Her: "You're just lucky I'm cool enough to put up with your guitars all over the house."
Me: "You're just lucky my guitars don't have vaginas."

Her: "I never dreamed of living in a big nice house with guitars all over the place."
Me: "Funny, that's exactly the type of house I dreamed of living in."

Ya gotta love dem wives!

My wife doesn't complain about my guitars...Right before we got together, my band of seven years had just broken up. I was just so distraut about it I just quit playing altogether and sold all my equipment. Well I went into the AF and we got married...For our first Anniversary, she suprised me with a very nice Fender Acoustic, which is still the only acoustic I have!

Well that lead to a used Strat and a SF Champ...and the rest is history. And the best part, she can't complain since she started my GAS up again...although she will critique my playing, we used to talk about it, and she'd say, first song sounded good, second one not so much...now she just goes Roman emporer on me, thumbs up or thumbs down :!: :) :(

My wife is Awesome! She loves my playing and if I even look at a guitar she either encourages me to get it or she gets it for me. My wife is an amazing seamstress and photographer....she has a bunch of sewing machines and also vintage sewing machines and cameras. We both support, encourage and respect each other's hobbies. She never complains when I play and as an added bonus she makes all my amp covers and anything else I need for my gear and to wear! I am a very lucky man!

Maybe you should try wiping her down with a soft cloth and hanging her on the wall. Only taking her down when you desire.  8) No offence intended to anyone. :)

The key is to make sure she has something she's into as well. That way you can trade off on who gets to do what while the other watches the kids.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I showed my wife the music video for Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Cold Shot" yesterday. She didn't think it was funny. I wonder why??? :? If you've never seen it, and you can relate to this topic, It's a must see. You can find it on YouTube.

Not sure if this was mentioned.. sorry it it was...

Its simple, you are embracing/holding something else more than your wife... Guitar is one of the few instruments that you actually strap to your body and put both arms around...

And this is not me trying to be funny... I am serious...
