I was scouting for my Lefty Strat this weekend. Once I found a instrument I liked, I marched up to the counter and proceeded with the purchase.

I asked the salesman if the rebate was still in effect, I knew it was but was trying to be polite and remind him I wanted my $50.00 discount without seeming demanding.

Neither of the salesman knew of the rebate. The one fellow said "Fender did not send us any paperwork" I had him bring up the message Brad had posted on the community index.

They did not fight over it and gladly chopped off the $50.00. I was a bit suprised over this. This was not a Guitar Center, or a small hole in the wall, but a major dealer in a large city.

Way back when Fender introduced the American Series, Fender ran a promotion where the dealer was supposed to give you a free pack of strings if you tried any of the new guitars. So I went to a large local Fender dealer (they had three stores in different cities) and asked to try out a new Strat. When I finished playing it I asked them for my free strings and they looked at me like I was crazy. They didn't have a computer connected to the internet so I grabbed an issue of Guitar Player and showed them the full page ad about the "test drive" promotion. (Then they happily asked me what sort of Fender strings I wanted and handed them to me.)

Were they really unaware, or were they just working it? Every once in a while you'll have someone playing the game.

You may be correct. When I left one of the guys said jokingly "don't tell any of your friends"

There is a store just like that in My neighborhood. If the customer doesn't bring it up they wont either. You dont think the rebate gose directly in the cash box, do you? Another fine example of (Buyer Be Ware).

Say what you want about GC, but the last time I was there they had large tags on the wall informing you of Fender's discounts.

Yes, they have their good points and bad. All in all I like GC and have bought stuff from them. Often though, the employees are not guitarists or musicians and that is a handicap.
