Thanks for posting Tony. I heard about it earlier this evening from my drummer and was saddened by the news of his passing on. R.I.P. Hubert Sumlin.

While I'm not in shock that this happened, it's still a tough pill to swallow. I had the great fortune of being able to meet him and watch him play on several occasions and he's absolutely one of the musicians I look up to the most. He was also a good guy and he could be really funny too, especially when he was telling Howlin' Wolf and/or SRV stories.

I first met him the summer before last. I was in Austin for the National Guitar Workshop, where the guest artists would be Hubert Sumlin and Bob Margolin. The night before I decided to head to Antone's to jam. I didn't really know anyone, so it was just the luck of the draw to determine who I played with and when. During the set before I was supposed to play I noticed a guy walk in the door who looked an awful lot like Hubert Sumlin. It took a second to sink in, but then I realized he didn't just look like Hubert Sumlin, he was Hubert Sumlin. And he was followed in by Bob Margolin and a little later, Pinetop Perkins.
After they were settled in at their table (which was right in front of the stage), my name got called and I played a set of about three or four songs. Afterwards Hubert had some really kind words for me. Then he, Bob Margolin and Pinetop Perkins all got onstage and jammed for about an hour. I spoke with Hubert a little bit more before he left, but I got to see him again the next day at the Masterclass at NGW. When he was finished playing and relating some more of his stories he stood up, pointed at me, and said "That girl can play the blues!". And I was really popular for the rest of the week.

I also went back to Austin a short time later to see him, Bob Margolin, Pinetop Perkins, and Willie Big Eyes Smith return to Antone's for a show. It's hard to believe that three out of four of them are gone now.

My status from Facebook:

Just learned that one of my favorite musicians of all time passed away today. Hubert Sumlin was one of the most original guitarists in blues and his influence is evident today in the playing of many blues and rock musicians. He was also a great guy and I feel so incredibly fortunate to have met him and to have inadvertently opened for him a little over a year ago. I wish I could have seen more of him, but I guess it just makes the couple of times I did more that much more special. He'll be greatly missed.
