We used to cover a few of Frank's simpler tunes like "Willie the Pimp", "Charva", and "Road Ladies". The Blues band I'm in now agreed to cover "Road Ladies". That was a banner day because we're really old school. Like Slim Harpo, Muddy Waters, Albert and BB King, Howlin Wolf, RL Burnside. To me Blues is Blues, but I love and play all types of music and Frank was always at the top of my list. Zappa Plays Zappa is great and Dweezil does a fine job, but sadly the show thing that Frank was so great at is missing.

I think there are a lot of people who haven't really heard any Zappa in a long time and would be pleasantly surprised to remember how good it is. Then again I tried to play the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD for a couple of my younger friends and I was apparently the only one who enjoyed it. It's not exactly flavor of the month kind of stuff....and what kids are listening to these days, well....don't even get me started! LOL!

That's to bad to hear. I'm 40 now and have also been trying to share the ZPZ DVD with some younger guitar players. And as a whole I would say that most of them find it to be a bit out there and maybe a bit of an acquired taste, but they didn't "DISLIKE". The found it pretty cool and different, and were all pretty happy to be introduced to it.

So although they may not be running out to start their own Zappa record collection their interest was peaked and horizons were expanded :)

Frank Zappa was amazing. I do have Joe's Garage and I love the whole narrative that takes place on the record. Sort of like the Spinal Tap parody.

Saw Frank Zappa at the Palace Concert Theater in Providence, RI, October 1975. The band Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar), André Lewis (keyboards, vocals), Roy Estrada (electric bass), Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophone, vocals), Terry Bozzio (drums, vocals). I remember Frank sat in a chair most of the evening, ripping up the neck and burning smokes on the headstock. Funny thing, I was working a parking lot near the Palace and as usual on concert nights, collected quite a stash in lieu of cash. One group had an extra ticket, did some bartering and ended up 4 rows back, stage left!

Frank was Frank....I loved his attitude as much as his music...he was also an astute public speaker on global events and politics as well as BIG BUSINESS. I used to cover some of his earlier stuff like Plastic People, Hey Punk and Whats the Ugliest Part of Your Body...always got good crowd response with them
