Great thread, I've always been into history, infact one of the only classes I did not skip while in high school. And I also had a great uncle who was a motorcycle messenger in the German Army in WWI, then after moving to the states in the 20's got married, had a son who joinsd up after Peal Harbor, was going to be sent to the European Theater and he would'nt speak to him because he would be , as he put it "killing you're own people".
Then somehow endup in the Pacific so everything was OK then. It was great as a kid going over there to see him, He would have a few, get loud, yell at us in German, and then end up in his old German Uniform. What a trip

I have also done our Family history and I'm a member Sons of the Revolution having proven and verified and obtained the military records of My ancestor who fought in the Revolutionary War. Family come to U.S. in 1714 on My Fathers side from Aulenbach Germany and Rushberg Rhineland Germany. Some ancestors were even killed in an Indian Raid in Berks County PA. in 1757 and I no where they are Buried. While doing the Family history we have been photographing all the family graves sites we can find.
Plus I find myself researching history in My numismatic pursuits, I been collecting since a teenager.

I am a history freak myself. I preferred historic topics is European history, war and military, music, history of sience, and odd history (trivia you might not hear much about). On my X-mas wishlist is a book about Napoleon Bonaparte. My three favourite books on history in my collection are "The Mighty Fortress: A new history of the German people" by Steven Ozment. "Becoming Charlemagne: Europe, Baghdad and the empires of A.D. 800" by Jeff Sypeck. And "How to kill: The definitive history of the assassin." by Kris Hollington (this one is named after CIA guidelines on assassinations).
When I travel abroad I would rather like to travel to cities like Berlin, Krakow, Vieanna, Paris and other historical cities with old parts and great museums, rather than Ibiza.

Jrockr91...I will shoot you a PM with my local. I also like history, but am in no way an expert, but I have spent many an hour watching the History and Military Channel and am intersted in the Vietnam and WWII eras.

What I call history I'm sure some of you fondly remember as "the good old days". The Beatles were in a history book I used to have in school.
The extent of my interest in anything pre-reformation is purely based in computer games, Rome Total War, Ages of Empires etc.
Music history wise, I like the Baroque and Romantic periods, though I'm not terribly fond of the Classical (with a capital "C") period.

I can't stand hearing about my own countries history, basically it 1000 odd years of people killing each other over who should or shouldn't be here.

Wow, I didn't realize there would be so many history lovers here. Anyway, for all you interested in the WWII era, I'd like to recommend a book I read recently. It's called "Unbroken", and it's a gripping true story about an American airman who went down in the pacific, and got captured by the Japanese and sent to a POW camp.

Fascinated with WWI history and Vietnam. My father had a journal from my great uncle from WWI written in the trenches that was pretty fascinating to read. Unfortunately... my brother got his Bayonette. There is some really interesting things that took place during that war. For one... like the German's off the coast of the US in an effort to persuade Mexico to invade and draw the U.S. into the conflict. Interesting naval campaigns. And some of the largest battles, Pachendale is fascinating in itself. Also wanted to understand as much as i could about the Vietnam war from a perspective other than the anti war point of view.

this photo was taken by the Belgian underground and is a picture of another relative from Scotland who was in the RAF. I was told he was a known to be a fairly respected pilot so when the German's found the wreckage, they gave him a military funeral. The picture was sent back to Scotland to his family.
