Since I been playing bass since 1970, I had a chance to play all of Leo Fender's creations for the bass player. One bass , The Musicman Stingray, has a nice nice deep and funky tone to it. It also has a nice neck width too. I had two Sabres too. One model was pre Ernie ball, and I other, was post Ernie Ball. For my money, the Stingray has the tone and the feel of a Leo Fender bass. Now, I wondering why didn't fender buy the rights to make The Musicman Stingray, and the Sabre? Also, I did own a Musicman speaker cabinet, that was one of the best bass cabinet I ever owned. Anyway, I just wondering why Fender didn't buy the rights to Leo's other bass The Stingray. I would think, it would of been a good investment, because It would be like putting all of leo's creations together. Of course, back in the day, leo started Musicman because he couldn't use his name any any other cration he made at the time(CBS years). Interesting to me , that the CBS years, aren't spoken that much, and they too have their place in Fender History also. The reason why I spoke about the CBS years is, the other day, I was looking at some old Fender catalogs from 1967 to 1970. I noticed something very interesting. At the time, fender was offering "solid-state" amps. Some based on the zodiac signs, while others, were based new designs all together. I found that to be very interesting about fender amps, during that time. Now, many of fender amps are 'solid-state", and wouldn't be something to bring back some of those early designs that were"passed by"? I know fender made some very good amps, but they lacked the power for bass. Those solid-state bass models had more power than their tube counterparts. I wonder what happen back then? In a way, when leo fender helped design the "new" Musicman amps back then, they had a "look" simliar to those solid state fender amps. Many of my guitar friends, had brought those Musicman guitar amps, and still have them now. Very strong amps!! It think CBS fender "dropped the ball" somewhere, and it costed the Fender name in the long run.

And don't forget about Leo's last project of G&L guitars and basses. It has been said Leo thought of the G&L L-2000 as his best bass.

Quote:
b) Leo’s favorite overall design for a bass?

“G&L L-2000 was his choice. The P-Bass he was proud of but the L-2000 he liked most. I would definitely say the L-2000.”

It is a matter of taste. I owned a Music Man Sting Ray 5...I bought a Fender Roscoe Beck Signature 5 String Bass and have never looked back. After countless gigs and sessions, it has proven it is priceless (in tone) to me. My employers really dig the sound too! Though, a good friend of mine uses a Stingray Bass and gets a wonderful tone for what he is doing. It really is matter of personal preference. Each instrument will have have it's own unique timbre, you just have find the one that meets the demands of your style and gig. If you are really torn and have the cake & need, get both!
