So guys, which solder is the best for using on guitars and amps? I've read that rosin core is the best, I just want to make sure I'm using what is best suited for this application. Thanks.

a rosin core 60/40 is EASIER to solder with not so much better. it flows smoother and takes less heat to get the job done. the more lead in the solder the lower the melting temperature and less stress on the components. lead free takes allot more heat to melt because of the high tin content and is harder to work with. lead free is safer for your children but if you kids are playing in your guitars and amps you have bigger problems

So, the more lead content, the cooler you can run the gun. If that's the case, then why not use 100% lead? That way nothing gets overheated. Or does the rosin do something also?

The rosin is a flux (cleaner) and pure lead will be far to soft and oxidize fast. It also to much lead is more likely to melt in higher temperature operating environment.

10-4. Rosin core 60-40 is it then. I have a roll of solder that I have been using in the past. Not sure what kind it is, but it does have a rosin core(I think). It leaves some brown coloration in the puddle of solder when I use it.

yes the brown residue is the rosin. modern rosin cores don't leave a harmful residue so i wouldn't worry about it.

but some kester 60/40 solder and a Weller WES51 make for some effortless iron work
a quick tip for soldering pots, a fat tip for the iron when soldering the pot casing works best. it retains its temperature longer and causes less heat to travel to the rest of the pot.

+1

The same to be said about soldering ground busses to an amp chassis or a ground wire to a Strat's trem claw.
